I recently tried to install openSUSE Leap 15.1 from the 120 MByte network image. It coincided with server issues at download.opensuse.org a couple of weeks ago, which was basically not working at the time. So I tried to switch to another mirror ...

# What worked

In the network image's Grub menu, I could tell where to download the installer (the 6 parts of it) from. So here I could avoid going through download.opensuse.org just fine.

# What did not work

Once the installer had started, it attempted to download a package index ... from download.opensuse.org. No matter what I did, I could not motivate the installer to retrieve the package index elsewhere.

# What (eventually) worked (again)

Once I managed to install the system in very slow motion (I went for a very minimal installation), I could change the repository URLs within the system with YaST/zypper away from download.opensuse.org to another mirror and get the rest of the installation done this way.

# Likely workarounds

Install entirely offline from DVD(?).

# Summary

Being unable to configure a package (index) mirror in the installer is a major flaw and turns the resolver download.opensuse.org into a single point of failure.
