Description Daniel Bauer 2019-07-26 08:00:05 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0
Build Identifier:

I position the icons for programs and files on my desktop. When I log out and in again (or after a reboot) the icons lost their position and are mixed somehow over the desktop, so that I have to arrange them again.

It even places one icon below the screen size, so that the desktop gets a scroll line on the right.

Some icons are moved, others stay where they have been.

There is no difference whether I lock the symbols or not, except that after the reboot with the moved icons I cannot move them when locked, of course - but the system can, obviously :-(

Desktop Settings (here in German, translated by me...):
Layout: folder view
Background-Type: Image
Positioning: scaled
Place: show desktop folder
Symbols in lines, left
do not sort
size: middle (slider on position 4 of 6)
2 Text lines

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Place icons for applications and files all over the desktop
2. reboot
3.
Actual Results:
Many icons are moved to other positions on the desktop, even outside of the screen size, so that the desktop background gets a scroll-line.

Expected Results:
Icons stay where I have put them.

I had the same problem in the beginning of OS 42.3, but with time it disappeared.
Comment 1 Daniel Bauer 2019-08-14 09:45:16 UTC
Nobody looks at this bug?

I believe (not know) that when logging in KDE (or X?) is confused with the screen size. It looks as if it thinks the screen is smaller that it actually is (it is 1980 x 1200).

It takes all the icons that I positioned on the right and spreads them somehow over the screen. It also moves some of the other icons and puts one below the screen height, so that a scroll bar appears.

Now when I want to move that icon that is below the screen height back to its position on screen I have to do it TWICE. After the first move it just jumps back to the position below. Only with the second attempt it works.

This is reproducible every time. It is as if after moving the icon for the first time KDE learns about the real screen dimensions and only after that allows to place the icon.

It is very annoying. After each log out... always...
Comment 2 Daniel Bauer 2019-08-14 12:42:19 UTC
I tested now. When I place the icons more to the left (leaving free 10 cm or two rows on the right) they don't move after a logout/in and stay where they were.

Still, for a moment a scroll bar appears to the right, but disappears immediately and the icons are on their position.

So somehow when starting a session, KDE or X thinks my screen is smaller.

I truly hope somebody will look at this annoying bug. Since KDE lost the ability to place icons freely on the desktop and having only a limited number of fixed squares, the loss of two rows is much. Also it doesn't look nice having all on the left.

I expect from a desktop system that the complete screen is usable.
Comment 3 Fabian Vogt 2019-08-14 15:18:48 UTC
There were some big changes in plasma git lately which should fix several issues caused by screen resizing, but unfortunately they're just too big for backporting.

Maybe we can figure out what's up with the screen size changing though.

Does it work with a fresh user account?
Comment 4 Daniel Bauer 2019-08-14 16:31:02 UTC
I just made a new user. Logged in and copied some app-starters from the KDE-menu to the desktop. Distributed them over all the screen and put several all to the right.

Logged out and in again - and the same happened: icons were newly distributed on the screen.

When logging in, the very first moment - not even a second - the desktop appears correct (icons on the desired positions), and immediately there is one "flicker" and the icons get redistributed randomly.
Comment 5 Fabian Vogt 2019-08-14 16:35:24 UTC
Ok, please attach the journal for the lifetime of that new user's session.
Comment 6 Daniel Bauer 2019-08-14 16:48:57 UTC
How/where can I get that journal?
Comment 7 Fabian Vogt 2019-08-14 16:59:52 UTC
(In reply to Daniel Bauer from comment #6)
> How/where can I get that journal?

Run "journalctl". If you don't get anything back, try again as root.
Comment 8 Daniel Bauer 2019-08-14 17:17:07 UTC
as user this gives nothing, as root there are about 7000 lines. I copied what I believe is since the last logout from my "normal" user (daniel) and login to the new user (te). Hope it helps. If not please advice what exactly to do. Thank you.

(Oh, btw. the icons on the screen of the new user cannot be moved - they are not locked - and not be clicked...)

Where can I change that? In KDE system settings I have only "DVI-I-2" or "no main monitor" ("Kein Hauptbildschirm").

Just try both

It makes no difference. I'll try to plug the monitor in other plugs... (the monitor has two inputs, the graphic card several outputs...). I'll let you know.
Comment 15 Daniel Bauer 2019-08-15 12:22:09 UTC
uff - changing the plugs was no good idea :-)

the second input plug on the monitor seems dead (no signal, also not the bios messages at boot)

plugging in the second output of the card first made the boot messages huge and then entering into KDE didn't work at all (freezes)

Now I'm back on the original plugs and the problem continues, of course...

Maybe disabling kscreen completely helps: In system settings, startup and shutdown, disable "KScreen 2" in background services.

Unfortunately this doesn't change anything :-(

Since I don't have any icons anymore in the right most two rows, icons stay where they are.

But as soon as I place an icon there, after logout/login, icons are moved.

Obviously the system thinks the screen is less wide in the first moment... Even with no icons in the right outer rows, after login, during a first moment a scroll line is displayed at the right, but then disappears...

That's weird, without kscreen there shouldn't be any doubt about the screen resolution/size. So I'm out of ideas. You could try to install Tumbleweed or even unstable KDE repos and see if the bug is fixed there.

Tumbleweed is too risky for me, as this is my only work computer and I don't need the latest, just simply that it works :-)

Maybe the problem goes with my Nvidia card/drivers/settings. Also there are no /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ files talking about the screen, but as much as I understood what I found searching, it isn't necessary neither.

Also I thought, maybe there is a boot kernel parameter. In Yast, under "Bootloader settings" -> Kernel Parameter -> Konsolenauflösung is set to "automatisch durch grub 2 erkannt" (recognized automatically by grub2?). The selection list goes only to 1600 x 1200, while this screen has 1920 x 1200 pixels. I don't know it this could have any influence. The most right position that my icons are displayed without moving after login is at approx. 1650 px (right border of text)...
Comment 20 Wolfgang Bauer 2019-08-23 13:09:46 UTC
The bootloader settings should have no influence here.

Just a wild guess:
Perhaps nvidia-settings changes the resolution during login?
Maybe try to delete/rename ~/.nvidia-settings.rc if it exists.

I renamed that file - no change :-(

It isn't recreated after logout/in, nor after reboot, but when I open the NVIDIA-settings it is created immediately. The file doesn't seem to have any effect...
Comment 22 Daniel Bauer 2019-09-06 08:10:06 UTC
Update: it's definitively a nvidia driver problem, not KDE...

Meanwhile my system had turned unusable with constant freezes. I removed all nvidia drivers and run my card using nouveau, and the problems are gone: no freezes (knock on wood...) and the icons stay on their place after logout/in and after reboot. I can also use all desktop space for icons - also icons in the most right rows now stay where they are.

It is absolutely reproducible, as well with the drivers from the opensuse repo as well with the *.run ("the hard way") directly from nvidia. I de- and re-installed the nvidia drivers several times, and it always gave the same results:

with nvidia driver: icons from the right rows move after logout/in (+random freezes)

without nvidia, but nouveau: icons stay, no freezes.

So, you can close this bug for KDE, and I'll try to add a new one for drivers.

Thanks for your time!

That's indeed some good news! I'll just reassign this bug to the appropriate component.

Random resolution changes of the nvidia driver sounds weird to me. Never heard of such an issue ...

The resolution changes are not random. They occur always and always in the same way. The only random thing is the distribution of the icons, if there were icons in the two most right rows of the desktop.

As described earlier, in the very first moment when the desktop is displayed, a scroll bar appears on the right for a second or so, and then disappears /if/ there are /no/ icons in the two most right icon-rows of the desktop.

If there were icons in those two rows, the icons get redistributed in a random way over the desktop, one icon below of the actual screen size, and the scroll bar remains until that icon is manually moved inside the screen size (which only works in the second attempt).

All this happens after /every/ logout/in or reboot, constantly and reproducible, without exceptions. And all this happens only with the nvidia drivers, not with nouveau.

(Furthermore occur freezes which I described in my new bug report)
Comment 26 Stefan Dirsch 2019-09-06 13:45:09 UTC
For me this sounds like the detected native resolution isn't the one you configured for your desktop. Could you check this with

  xrandr -q

# man xrandr
[...]
If invoked without any option, it will dump the state of the outputs, showing the existing modes for each of them, with a '+' after the preferred modes and a '*' after the current mode.

I don't know if this output serves, because now I am running the card with the nouveau driver because with the nvidia drivers it freezes constantly (as mentioned in my new bug https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1149716 ). However, except of de-installing nvidia I haven't changed any settings

Indeed I would need the output with Nvidia 's proprietary driver running.

right now I am in a bigger work, but tomorrow or sunday I will install the nividia drivers to get the desired information.

If you need more things tested while the nvidia driver is running please let me know, because after the tests I will de-install it again (as you see in my other bug report I cannot work with the system using nvidia).

Please treat me like a computer dummy and tell me exactly what you need and how to get it. Thank you :-)

So, I installed the Nvidia driver with Yast from suse rpm, and rebooted.

What jumps to my eye is that now DVI-I-2 is connected, while with nouveau it's DVI-I-1 (which seems correct to me, see photo of the cards back)

After login the icons were re-destributed again, one below the screen size, a scroll line to the right. This, because again I had icons in the most right rows of the desktop...

I'll attach photos of the desktop, too (some parts covered with black for privacy reasons)

the icon below screen size

The icon in the lower left corner ("Yohan") was placed below screen size and is only visible when scrolling down.

To move the icon inside the screen side I have to move it twice. After the first move it jumps back to its outside position. The second move works. Then the scroll line disappears.

Comment 34 Stefan Dirsch 2019-09-08 09:56:56 UTC
In both cases native(=detected) and selected resolution is the same. 1920x1200. I wouldn't care about the number of detected outputs here. This sounds like a red herring here...

So in the end my theory was wrong. I have no explanation, why KDE behaves as it does right now.

But since the driver no longer runs stable for you, this doesn't matter anyway. Unfortunately your gfxcard is no longer supported by the current driver. :-( Sigh...
