/usr/share/xfce/applications/defaults.list needs to be updated due to  Thunar-folder-handler.desktop deprecation.

Solution:

Change inode/directory=Thunar-folder-handler.desktop to the Xfce universal exo-file-manager.desktop

Solution in comment #1 to be applied also for email, web browser and terminal so that the preferred applications as default are always respected
