Description David Kerkhof 2022-01-04 17:54:58 UTC
When I want to select one of my webcams to do a video conference I am presented with /dev/video0, video1 etc, the normal lowlevel device names. But it used to be, at least a few months ago, that the webcams were shown by their friendlier name like "HD Pro Webcam C920", which makes easier to select the correct one.

I thought this was of my recent new installation of tumbleweed, but when I booted my old tumbleweed it had changed as well, now only showing lowlevel device names. In my opinion a regression from a user point of view.

The plasma hardware info tab shows the friendly name, so it is still read by the system but not shown to v4l2-ctl and webcam applications.

Has this been dropped or has this been changed so it can be activated again?

Edit, the devices are shown as "Video Capture 3", not as /dev/video0. But still not a user friendly name

This change should have been reverted now for bsc#1193255. Please check the latest kernel in OBS Kernel:stable repo.

I tried this newer kernel this morning, but it's the same with that kernel. Maybe the patch hasn't been applied yet. But if a patch is already available, I will wait, no problem, as long as this is solved.

thanks a lot,
regards
