Description Rob Phillips 2006-07-06 16:49:03 UTC
Uneventful installation to Intel P4, 1GB RAM, nVidia GeForce 6800 GT
System chose VESA mode automatically, I overrode that, selecting exact monitor, 24bit, and 1024x768@60

Screen doesn't fill corner to corner as it should, and cannot be adjusted to fit. But more importantly, no 3D supported. Is this expected? Do I need to get the driver directly from nVidia? Both computers seemed to have a problem with my nVidia GFX Cards.

hwinfo --monitor

During installation, I corrected from generic monitor to NEC Multisync LCD2010 and this is what is currently indicated by hwinfo...

hwinfo --gfxcard

Manually overrode Vesa setting at installation configuration screen.
Comment 3 Rob Phillips 2006-07-06 17:07:25 UTC
Clarification: Currently using KDE and all indications on any application is that 3D is not supported. Also, in resetting the fit of the overall XWindow to my monitor, the Circle with 3D in the center has a Circle/Slash indicating no 3D...
Comment 4 Rob Phillips 2006-07-07 03:25:29 UTC
Not sure why, if hwinfo --gfxcard indicates the proper info (nVidia 6800 GT supporting 3D), why does the KDE desktop and all the apps I tried to run said No 3D installed yet....

Not sure why this was marked resolved...perhaps because of the lapse of time until my reply to Michael's last comment.

In any case... I assume that OpenSUSE works, but I am having a problem with two different systems, both using GeForce 7800 boards... The problem remains, in this case I have followed the guidance expressed in http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA
with no change in effect. ThreeD apps still say 'No 3D installed yet...'
Comment 7 Michael Gross 2006-08-11 11:32:38 UTC
Did you enable the driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
In `Section "Device"' there is a line

Driver "nv"

which must be changed to

Driver "nvidia"

If the problem is there, open a new bug report and describe your problem in detail. Opening old reports for new problems is no good idea ;)
