Description Robert Harvey 2006-08-22 11:03:07 UTC
The user experience with zen-updater is very poor.

In particular, it is very slow at building the list of patches available, and when you tell it to go ahead nothing much happens. In either case the window for zen-updater is not refreshed at anything like a normal interval, so (for example) if you switch sessions to another login and switch back again all you see is a blank window.

Eventually (after perhaps half an hour) there is a progress bar, but this crawls along very slowly, and is itself not refreshed very often

In all this hiatus, some tens of MB of log file get written! it must be possible to provide a more frequent screen repaint service, and to provide more feedback to the user about what is going on.

update:
with no work to do, the updater does not seem sluggish. It comes back and tells you there is nothing to do quite quickly.

I obtained all the updates available yesterday with YAST (see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=200873#c6) but when I ran zen-updater today It sat blank and empty with "getting update list" for over fifteen minutes. I am on a 512K broadband connection.
