Steffen, didn't we just change it, or did we always want to change it? I don't recall; please check your SVN. Well, yes. The way it is now is how people wanted it.
I think there was a proposal somewhere for a two-line layout like
F1 Help F2 Language F3 Video Mode ...
English 1024x768
Maybe that would really be the solution.
