Using top, I find out that the process that lasts so long is called parse-metadata We all know it is slow and broken. what you need to do in your case is remove it, it is not neccesary for yast to work /etc/init.d/novell-zmd stop rpm -e zmd libzypp-zmd-backend sqlite-zmd rug zen-updater after that you can use a) zypper for the command line b) opensuseupdater for update notification/installation For your information, this bug has been fixed in openSUSE 10.3 alpha1 where ZenWorks is not part of the default installation anymore.
