Description Casual J. Programmer 2007-04-11 05:47:44 UTC
On an FSC Amilo Si1520 running openSuSE 10.3 alpha3 the following happens:

On shutting down ( From the GUI = Computer/Logout/Shut down or from a terminal = init 0 ) the upper part of the display gets overwritten with garble and the machine halts indefinitely. No keyboard access, no screen blanking, the only way out is power off.

The display shows boot time information from terminal 8 ( CTL+ALT+F8 ).

Not sure how to gather more information on this, frequency is every other shut down ( approximately 3 out of 5 ), no apparent harm is done.

This may fit in with bug 237676 and bug 252509

I think it's the best to wait until these bugs are fixed. Then set to ASSIGNED again.

This (now) happens when logging out and back in a few times ( approximately 10 should suffice to run into the problem ).

Currently running openSuSE 10.3 alpha4 with GNOME Desktop on said FSC Amilo Si 1520 with Intel 945 GM chipset and GMA 950 chiptype with 128MB of memory ( graphics data reported by Windows XP )

Not sure what kind of log would be helpful, please advise.

xorg-x11 is 7.2-68
gdm is 2.18.1-9

I get a timeout when trying to download the screenshot. Probably it's too big.

Trying jpg instead of png

Could we figure out if it it's a gdm related problem by switching to kdm/xdm?

1) rcxdm stop
2) set DISPLAYMANAGER to xdm/kdm in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager
3) rcxdm start

This would be helpful for me.

OK,
setting to XDM logging in 20 times, logging out 20 times = nothing peculiar
setting to GDM logging in 4 times, logging out 4 times = freeze = only working key is power switch

Ok. Then let's close it as duplicate.
