I keep getting the following message in my /var/log/messages:

You have to install the required firmware. A description how to obtain and install the firmware can be found at [1], section "openSUSE 10.2 Option 1".

Exactly. You can alternatively use the script install_bcm43xx_firmware (part of package bcm43xx-fwcutter) to download and install the firmware automatically.
