The "Check Now" menu entry gets never disabled. Starting a second check while a check is already running doesn't seem to be healthy. :-)

The check process is started only once at the same time. This is done by the logic of the backend. 
Your are right, it would more userfriendly to disable the "check now" button while checking for updates.
