Description Adam Kirchhoff 2007-10-08 11:55:09 UTC
The 8.41 drivers installed from the official fglrx repo (and, hence, the one-click install) is not recommended by AMD for any non-Radeon HD card. I have an PCIe x850, and AMD officially lists 8.40.4 as the recommended driver. This driver is, in fact, completely broken on AGP r400/r500 cards (ie. and AGP x700 like I have at work). 8.41 should only be installed on radeon HD cards (ie the 2400/2600/2900 cards). Rumor has it that the next driver release (8.42) will support all r300, r400, r500, and r600 cards but, till then, there are different drivers for r300-r500 and r600 cards.

The 8.41.7 driver crashes X on my machine (with the x850), though I can't be sure that it's due to the fact that 8.41.7 is technically unsupported on my machine as I have not tried 8.40 yet:

Stable support (including FireGL/FireMV) for non-Radeon HD cards is expected to happen with 8.43 again. The ATI RPMs will be updated to 8.43 once it's available (still this year). For now manually install the 8.40 driver. There are no plans to provide two different driver package combos for the 8.41/8.42 driver time frame.

I've seen this before. It seemed to be a configuration issue, since it didn't happen when using aticonfig. Unfortunately I needed to gave up on investigating this issue, since this was simply not possibe via Bugzilla without access to
a machine with such a card. :-( Unfortunately I don't have a X850 card for testing available ...

I'll try recreating my xorg.conf file with aticonfig and let you know how I make out.

I remember now. It's the modelines. The fglrx driver crashes whenever custom modelines are used.

Ok. This should only happen when DDC is not working and therefore SaX2 thinks it needs to create a Modeline. :-( This issue will be fixed by the next RPM driver update on the ATI server.
