Description Roman Shevtsov 2007-11-07 20:23:27 UTC
GTK yast "Install" module is boring simple compared to Qt ver.
I'm previous ubuntu user, for me Qt version is something similar to Synaptic, but gtk version is so boring simple that it really hard to find something in it and see needed information quickly. I'll say even "not user-friendly". It will be better to make it look more like Qt version.

Hi Roman,

To clarify, you don't like the Installer's look from the LiveCd? But you don't mind the simpler look of its tools once the system is installed?

I have actually never tried the yast-gtk Installer, but yes, I imagine that it looks boring. ;) We don't have a whole lot of control over it, but we should be able to pull off a nicer skin.

I have been hacking on yast-gtk package selector, and I will want to address the skins after that. Appended goes a couple of mockups.

installer's mockup

A mockup I did for a yast-gtk installer's skin. I am not used to Inkspace, it doesn't fully transmit what I'd like to do relatively to coloring, but I guess I'd go for a shape like that.

Goes in SVG, if you'd like to hack on it. ;)

Jakub's installer mockup

AFAIK, Gnome's Livecd installer is a window, so this wouldn't apply well. But its beautiful and it can inspire us.

Jakub's tools mockup

Jakub Steiner suggested us to simplify the tools skin for something like this.

The current skin is based on GtkWizard (old GnomeDruid) which is used as the wizard for Evolution, gnome-print-add, and some other tools. But yast uses this insane shift from tools to wizard, so it probably doesn't apply in most cases.

Ah, realized from your other report, you mean the package manager. I'm closing it as duplicate -- a new interface is being worked on, and if you'd like to expand your thoughts, please do it there. Love to hear from you. :)

Actually I talked about package selector (in yast control center it called Install software or something like this, because of this we misunderstood each other).

From this mockup the best, as of my mind, is second one (from the comment #3), I don't know how you'll fit it in window, but it looks great :)

As for package selector, I think it has to be re-designed to comply Qt version, which I like for its clear representation of what's going on in packages. If you think that it has to look different from Qt version, please have a look at Synaptic's interface, I think it looks great for GTK package selector.
