zypper search foo*bar
Unexpected exception.
Cannot create directory /var/lib/zypp/db/flags/scripts

it seems it tries to refresh the repos first, which it can't do

In this case it was the target initialization. But looked also at refreshing and found some problems there as well, thanx, fixed in svn. Will be in zypper 0.9.3.
