Description

I have had no problem with this with my installation on VirtualBox. Do you have the device notifier plasmoid open? Also, after you plug a memory device in, check dmesg to see if it was found. I have the device notifier plasmoid open. It works because it shows CDs and DVDs as I put them in. dmesg does not seem to "feel" the memory device, either, because no messages are shown. Maybe you could check the output of lsmod to see if you have a USB driver loaded. Alternatively you can use YaST->Hardware->Hardware Information to check. Also you could use rpm -qa | grep usb to see if you have libusb installed. Created attachment 203488 [details]

In looking at your YaST hardware information, I noticed you are using the Linux 2.6.25-rc5-git3-6-default kernel. In your bootloader, are you offered to boot from a different kernel? I have 2 entries to choose from: Linux 2.6.25-rc5-git3-6-default and OpenSUSE 11. When using the Linux 2.6.25-rc5-git3-6-default entry, my usb devices do not automount (or at least that I know of). dmesg does detect it though: usb 1-1: New high speed USB device ehci_hcd and address 3 I do not know what to do with it at this point. USB may be handled different because I believe USB drivers are going to be GPL-only in 2.6.25. So if you have another entry in your bootloader, boot that one and see if USB detection works then. Thanks The one you're looking at is already the default kernel (opensuse11), although the string reported there may seem different I positively booted the kernel labeled as opensuse11.. I have tried booting all four entries that the installer put there, for god measure, and the outcome is always the same. I think it's not acceptable that USB is rendered non functional, on a chipset (nforce3) that's hardly exotic and that otherwise works flawlessly. At least please offer a manual workaround to mount usb devices, or this is probably going to upset quite a few people. As a followup to my last message, I've got a few more things to report: a) I am connecting not directly to my usb port but to a powered usb hub (still, it worked flawlessly ever before). b) usb hotplug actually works if I put something in the hub (e.g. a memory card) before turning on the pc. The memory card I put there before turning on the pc is not recognized automatically as a new device, but when I connect other devices they do show up on the new devices plasmoid. Still, I can manually mount the memory card I put in the the hub so although this is far from ideal, at least I do have a workaround of some kind. c) the window opened by the plasmoid when I try to open the newly plugged device crashes. I need to go to /media/mydevice to open the device. Please attach output from dmesg after booting with connected usb storage device and after booting without usb device and later connected it. dmesg - 1st boot
this is the output I get if I boot without the memory attached.

dmesg - 2nd boot - only 1 mem inserted
This is what I get after the boot with one memory inserted (before I insert the 2nd memory)

dmesg - 2nd boot - both mem inserted
This is the output I get if I boot with a mem inserted and then insert a 2nd memory.
I have attached the requested information. This looks like a messed up hardware device. Do other USB storage devices work properly on this machine? Does this stick work on other Linux machines properly, or any other box? The problem is independent of the stick -- I have used four different ones (one is actually an external drive) and the result is the same. The same sticks work well with OpenSUSE 10.3 and Windows XP. Also, I have tested this with two different PCs on which i installed the Opensuse11 betas and the problem is the same. Both PCs have an ASUS main board, but one has an NForce 2 chipset and the other has a VIA chipset. Sorry forgot to remove "NEEDINFO". I'm seeing a similar problem - when I (finally) boot the Beta2 installation DVD to try to resurrect the Beta2 system it (mostly) installed on /dev/sdc7 (and won't boot due to GRUB issues discussed elsewhere), I tried to do a 'repair'. The overall result of that was that it claimed that NONE of the putative ext3 partitions on my (Western Digital 250MB MyBook) USB drive were valid! However, they appear to be valid to Fedora 8 and Fedora 9 AND they did appear to be valid to the SUSE 11.0 Alpha 3 installation that I had on /dev/sdc7 before (and overwrote, not upgraded, with Beta2). I'm using an HP dv9000z (AMD, 2GHz TurionX2, 2GB memory, dual internal SATA drives, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150, and the system board was recently replaced due to the infamous wireless/display problems). I boot with 'noapic' and with 'brokenmodules=ieee1394,ssb'. The usb sizing takes an inordinate amount of time (ca. 4-5 minutes), ieee1394 will hang if not excluded (or I briefly unplug the USB plug! - I have no firewire devices), and the 'ssb' driver for the Broadcom BCM94311MCG (Dell 1390) miniPCI card hangs in the 'loading' state. (BTW, the Broadcom does work beautifully with the b43 driver in Fedora 9, and with the ndiswrapper stuff in openSuSE 10.2). The attachments of #11 and #12 both show the kernel recognising storage devices. Please provide: 1. the output of "dmesg -c" before you plug in the storage device 2. the output of "cat /proc/partitions" before you plug in the storage device 3. the output of "dmesg -c" after you plug in the storage device 4. the output of "cat /proc/partitions" after you plug in the storage device Here comes the output of FOUR different tests.
Test #1: boot with a usb device in the usb hub.
Test #2: boot with a usb device in the usb hub, a second device is added after boot.
Test #3: boot without a usb device in the usb hub. A device is added after boot.
Test #4: boot without a usb device in the usb hub. A device is added after boot. A second device is added (after boot as well).

Sorry, I need to be more specific. My apologies. The procedure described in #19 is supposed to be done without any storage devices attached before you attach a storage device as described in #19. Could you also provide the output of "lsusb -v" before and after you plug in the storage device? The info you provided in #20 showed that ACPI is buggy, however the info in #22 showed no definite connection with the USB problem. However it does not rule it out and a coincidence is unlikely, but there's no proof. I'll ask a developer specialised in ACPI to look at this bug, too. Here's all the data you requested.
This is "dmesg -c" after boot, with no memory inserted:

Here are the partitions under same circumstances:
major minor #blocks name
8 0 80043264 sda
8 1 208813 sda1
8 2 1 sda2
8 5 2104483 sda5
8 6 77722438 sda6
After that, I inserted the usb stick and issued "dmesg -c" again. The result was an empty string. Partitions were unchanged.
After that, I took away and inserted again the usb stick and.. To my amazement, the stick was activated, recognized and used. Please note that other times it didn't do this, I tried many times inserting and detaching but to no avail. This is becoming random.
Also, here's the lsusb -v output before plugging it the first time and after plugging it the second time (when it started working):

I understood what made my usb sticks recognized in the latest batch of tests: it was the "lsusb -v" thing. I did some more tests and that command somehow "wakes up" the usb part of the pc, because as soon as I issue it (with or without the mem stick plugged in) everything works as it should. On the contrary, if I don't issue that command the usb stick is never recognized no matter what I do and no matter how many times I take out and reinsert the stick. So, summing up, there are two things that can make my usb system work: 1) booting up with a stick already inserted. If I do so, whenever I insert a second stick that second one is recognized. 2) issueing the "lsusb -v" command. That is extremely odd. Please provide "dmesg -c" before and after you do the "lsusb -v" Do you have installed the debug kernel? Can you locate a file named "register" under /sys/module/ehci_hcd/ ? This bug is most likely present in mainline and tracked at the kernel.org bugzilla http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10630 Can you also test whether you can use the following work around: rmmod ehci_hcd modprobe ehci_hcd > Do you have installed the debug kernel? Not to my knowledge.. I did a 100% default installation (not even additional packages). > Can you locate a file named "register" under /sys/module/ehci_hcd/ ? No, there is no such file. Here's the content of the directory: linux:/home/maxmars # ls /sys/module/ehci_hcd/ drivers holders initstate notes parameters refcnt sections srcversion >rmmod ehci_hcd >modprobe ehci_hcd The modprobe command does indeed make the usb stick work. Did I forget anything? Very well. This confirms that indeed you have the bug mentioned in #30 I'll make a kernel RPM with enhanced ehci debugging. *** Bug 349065 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** Please install the test kernel found at: http://beta.suse.com/private/oneukum/373128/ and repeat the test from #19 Secondly please perform (with this special debug kernel) a variant of the work around you reported in #27. But this time use "lsusb -v" immediatly BEFORE you plug in your device (within 2 seconds at most) Please provide "dmesg -c" before you issue the "lsusb -v" command and after you've plugged in the device Got the kernel, installed it, rebooted using it, here's the results for the six tests, one per comment.
lsusb -v before inserting stick:

When I say "before" and "after" I mean before and after issueing an "lsusb -v" command which does indeed make the stick work. You say in your initial post that you did not have the bug in prev versions of opensuse? How about 10.3? Did you have the same problem with that version? I am seeing the issue in 10.3 As far as I remember I didn't see this in 10.3. I certainly had 10.3 installed and used the same equipment in the same way.. Perhaps this showed up only with later revisions of the kernel? I don't update my suse often. > Checking motherboard port 0
> hub_status_data() returned 0
This looks like the problem yesterday fixed in mainline.
I'll make a backport
Please try the kernel at: http://beta.suse.com/private/oneukum/373128/ It work, congratulations! With this kernel I can just plug in a usb stick and it works. Any chance of a 32 bit kernel so I can see if the issue is resolved for me? A 32 bit kernel is about to be placed into the directory mentioned in #45 I am going to close this entry. Please reopen if it should not work on 32 bit in contrast to 64 bit. Having some issues with the 32 bit kernel you have uploaded and am unable to use it. There are pages of dependency issues popping up about yast2 and apparmor. If I try to remove these to resolve dependencies the list of other things that need to be removed gets longer and longer. Tried using the ignore for each of the dependency issues but could not then install the kernel - got a message stating something like it could not be installed due to . . . (I forget). Also noticed the kernel you have uploaded is 43Mb in size which is double the usual size for a debug kernel. Am I doing something wrong here? Opensuse 11 - clean install Kernel 2.6.25.5-1.1-pae i686 issue is still present I need t run rmmod ehci_hcd modprobe ehci_hcd to get my devices detected ?? In this case you are suffering from another bug. Please make a new report for that. |
