Description Martin Schlander 2008-04-19 17:04:16 UTC
The "community repositories" module (accessible via sw_single -> repository manager -> Add -> community repositories), has a confusing name. Since it includes not only community repos but also the official ones.

I have two suggestions on how to sovle it:

1) Create a separate additional module with the official repos called "Official repositories". This will also help users distinguish between unsupported community repos and supported official repos.

2) Rename the module to "Popular repositories", "Selected repositories", or something similar. If this solution were to be chosen something should be done to make distinguishing between official supported repos and community repos clearer.
Comment 1 Martin Schmidkunz 2008-04-25 09:48:27 UTC
Concerning 1: No. The modules were separated before and after some discussion we finally agreed on merging them. The reason for this was that the distinction to less experienced users is not clear.

Concerning 2:
What about renaming "Community Repositories" into "Online Repositories" and adding a column in the repo list to indicate the support status (column: supported by, choices: "openSUSE", "Community")?

I'm not sure about "Online Repositories", we already have some "Online" items in the control center and this could increase the confusion.

Mhm. What about "Configured Repositories in the Network" (instead of "Scan Using SLP" which is quite unintuitive as well :-)) and "Configured Repositories in the Internet"?

ping?

I think this is part of some Lukas' module.

A column with support status "openSUSE" or "community" - or maybe alternatively
"official" and "unofficial" sounds like a good idea, and should solve the
problem.

Another problem is that a lot of users seem to add all repos "just to be safe"
(including database, mailserver or debug which clueless desktop users don't
need) - not understanding the problems this might cause regarding conflicts,
stability, package manager speed etc., maybe the repos could be somehow
categorized into types of use or something - like "desktop", "server",
"development" - maybe even in different tabs.

#3
Not sure "configured repositores in network" and "configured repos in internet"
is a good choice - "configured" could imply they're already added to the
system. "Network" could be both internet and lan. How about:

- "Available repositories on the local network", and;
- "Available online repositories"

It seems such requests should go to FATE.

BTW: The proposed solution expects to have the repositories in table. So far, we don't support check boxes in table so adding a new column with extra information can't be used now.

Anyway, if you click on a repository, an extra information is written below the list of repos.

Hmm, what does yast2 sw_single use? (I guess it uses images instead of "real" checkboxes - but this solution could also be used here.)
Comment 9 Martin Schmidkunz 2010-03-29 10:09:24 UTC
In 11.3 the module is named "Software Repositories" which seems fine for me.
If there are any other requests, please use openFATE for them.
Thanks!
