Description Joe Morris 2008-04-19 23:33:08 UTC
The newest 10.3 Yast2 (yast2-online-update-2.16.11-2.5) shows patch summaries and patch descriptions in German on an English install of 10.3 (this is from the OBS Yast Backport). From what I remember, the Software Management was in English. I will attach a screen shot.

There may be a mixture of versions in the logs, as I just updated Yast from the repositories on Saturday.

This is not intended to work on 10.3. I don't know what the problem is, but testing YaST modules from openSUSE 11.0 (or BS, Factory...) makes sense only on openSUSE 11 (now beta)

As stated in the first post, these packages are from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/YaST:/Backport/openSUSE_10.3/, so one would assume that though these are probably the versions for 11, that these particular packages are indeed for 10.3 and are backported. Also, since 11 is still in beta, and 10.3 would more than likely have more of an opportunity to turn up bugs in the online update module, that is why I decided to file the bug. If you decide it is an INVALID bug, and would prefer it be turned in by someone running 11 beta, that is fine with me. I realize these are not the official supported Yast modules for 10.3, but the fact they were backported but apparently bug reports aren't accepted leaves me to wonder why go to the work to backport. My assumption was to more thoroughly test them than possible with 11 beta. I guess my assumption was incorrect. Sorry to waste your time.

BTW, if I were running 11 beta, I would NOT install packages for 10.3.

The URL with backported packages I see for the first time, I don't think such project was official in any way.

The package management in 11.0 was largely reworked again, so please, test the new things only on 11.0 betas.

I downgraded to the original Yast modules and zypp, as you are correct, the latest versions completely break opensuseupdater (and after reinstalling the older version, found out online update was broken in even more ways than I noticed. I had 4 or 5 updates available after downgrading, showing these packages aren't worth it to test for me in 10.3. You are correct, 11 betas are best for testing on the newest Yast. It isn't worth it to me to break my 10.3. I thought if it worked (which it appeared to do), it may be of some value to test those components, like online update, and if there were problems, file a bu report. I was wrong. I am back with the 10.3 original Yast.
