Description Forgotten User CxVz4LpaB5 2008-04-30 15:49:50 UTC
After the first step of installation, when all should be ok for the first reboot, you have to install the grub boot loader. In my case, I came into several issue that may be related to a general problem with the grub part of the setup.
For your info, I have on the sdb disk:
sdb1 : xp
sdb2 : vista
sdb4 : extended
sdb5 : linux
sdb6 : swap

* 1st try
- I have a list of the different Os that I can add to the grub boot menu.
Instead of acceting the proposed settings, I have choose the option to read the configuration from disk to see if all is ok. After I did this, the 'openSUSE', 'Floppy' and 'FailSafe' entry disappeared and I an entry listed as 'linux...<kernel version>-pae'. My others os entries appears (Xp and Vista).
when saving and rebooting, grub was not installed and I have my vista bootloader.

* 2nb try
- quite the same thing instead that this time I have this error message:
' An error occured during initrd creation
kernel image :/boo/vmlinuz-2.6.25-rc9-17-pae
initrt image :/boot/initrd-2.6.25-rc9-17-pae
root device :/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_ST330083IAS_3NF18YD5 part5 (/dev/sdb5) (mounted on / as ext3)
Kernel modules : processor thermal clock scsi_mod libata sata_sil sata_promise pata_amd fah jbd mbcache ext3 edd sd_mod usbcore ohci_hcd uhci_hcd ehci_hcd ff_memless hid usbhid

Features : block usb resume.userspace resume.kernel
bootsplash: openSUSE (1024 x 768)
19652 blocks
kernel image :/boo/vmlinuz-2.6.25-rc9-17-pae
initrt image :/boot/initrd-2.6.25-rc9-17-pae
root device (/dev/sdb5) not found
read partition(): failed to open dev/sys/block at usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.10.0/bootloader/tools.pm line 280.

Followed by a messager saying the the brub installation was successfull.

- 3rd try
This time a news install, at the end, got the message above 'an error occured...' followed by :
' Error occured while installing grub
gnu grub version 0.97 (640 k lower / 3072 upper memory)
[minimal bash like line editing is supported for the first word, tab lists possible command completion. anywhere else tab lists the possible completion of a device/filename]
grub> setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0)(hd0,4)
error 21: selected disk does not exist
grub`> quit

But, after a reboot, my grub bootloader appear! and it can even boot linux! Cool, I have then finished the setup.

At the end, I have try to use the grub option in yast to repair my grub menu and have my other os listed. After addind them I have set xp my default partition (sorry...) but when I have rebooted, the items are sroted the the way I have setup them in yast and the default entry is not even what I have choose in yast.

Update: I have booted in opensuse 11 to modify my entries list order. The only thing that I have changed is the order. I have save the configuration and the installation of the settings seems to be successfull. But after a reboot, I have selected my Opensuse 11 entry in grub and have this YD-part vga=xrror message:
 kernel (hd0) roo=/dev/disk/by-id/scsi_SATA_ST33AS_NF18YD5-part5 vga=0x317 resume=/dev/sdb6 splash=silent
error 1: filename must be either an absolute pathname or blocklist. Press any key to continue'

I have then booted with the dvd and try the repair option for grub, still with no luck.

Update.
I have been able to boot from grub with the failsafe option which worked well. From there, in the console, I have checked the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. I see that the entry for openSUSE 11.0 was here but totally empty (which sounds normal since the error reported earlier) I have then manually added the necessary informations (that is to say the same lines as the faisafe option without the restrictions) and added the 'resume' option. Then rebooted and in grub, I see the OpenSuse option. Once selected, the options I have added in the files appear in the 'Option' line below but it worked weel and I have been able to boot normally.

Sounds a lot like you a duplicate. If you could verify with beta2, this would be excellent. And next time, please attach your yast logs when reporting an installation bug, it would remove the guessing part on our side.
