Description Olaf Hering 2008-05-15 15:10:17 UTC
11.0beta3 on PS3

A PS3 has an ethernet and a wlan interface. The ethernet interface has a cable connected. I dont know if the wlan interface can be used at all in our office.

After an installation from DVD, with autoconfiguration and gnome desktop, the configured interface was wlan.
Why did yast prefer wlan over eth?
What is supposed to happen if a system has an ethernet card with cable plugged in and an (unused) wlan device?

Also, after yast2 lan was started, the gnome start menu still had the Network: wireless, Interface: wlan0 active.
This changed after a rcnetwork restart. I expected that yast does update such info. Maybe its a networkmanager thing.

Comment 6 Michal Zugec 2008-06-13 16:02:39 UTC
The problem is that hwinfo propagate Link status as yes for wlan.
This is probably bug in kernel driver maintainers
Comment 7 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2008-06-13 17:35:52 UTC
Well, as Olaf is in charge of the PS3 port, it must be in the driver for that platform, so assigning back to him :)
Comment 8 Olaf Hering 2008-07-15 11:28:43 UTC
I have booted the 11.0 dvd.
In linuxrc, ethtool and hwinfo always reports link down for wlan0
Comment 9 Olaf Hering 2008-12-08 16:04:37 UTC
still happens with 11.1gmc
Comment 10 Olaf Hering 2009-02-11 09:54:50 UTC
I guess the reason is that eth0 and wlan0 share the same MAC address due to hardware limitations.
Comment 13 Alexander Osthof 2009-03-09 10:54:39 UTC
No resources left (both developers who were working on ps3 are gone), reassigning to kernel-maintainers@.
Comment 14 Jeff Mahoney 2009-05-12 15:26:12 UTC
I can take a look at this. I'm lowering the priority since it only affects PS3s (and machines with a unified lan/wlan device, probably).
Comment 15 Jeff Mahoney 2010-04-28 22:48:58 UTC
This appears to be fixed in 11.1. I did an update to 11.1 and ethtool reports the link on wlan0 as down if it's not associated.

Closing as FIXED.
