Description Michael Glenn 2008-05-19 14:33:27 UTC
On boot of install DVD inside VM, checking installation media results in a "Insert installation CD-ROM or DVD" followed by a "No CD-ROM or DVD found." Attempting to install the OS gets to the System Analysis stage, then pops the error "No hard disks were found for the installation." Disk Partitioning shows no entries. Going into partition setup and opting to re-read the partition table does not bring anything up.

Environment: ESX 3.0.2, 62488. Default VM settings + 10GB HDD.

DVD ISO passes checksum.

This is new to Beta 3. Beta 2 and earlier recognizes the drive structure in an identical environment.

Some additional info, using physical hardware this time:

Intel D865GVHZ: Check media fails, System Analysis & Partition read OK.
Dell T3400 WS : Check media fails, System Analysis & Partition read OK.

Michael, this is a vmware bug, that should be fixed in their newer releases, please get an upgrade from them and it should be resolved.

We do not want to continue to work around a bug in their older releases in our kernel as the fix is not supported by the upstream kernel community, and vmware has solved the problem on their end.

it seems you are missing Patch ESX-1002431

see http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1002431

Okay; tried install again, this time w/the VM locked to use a blade updated to ESX 3.0.2-89841. The partition scan worked just fine this time. Guess that teaches me to keep my lab blades up to date. :P

"Check Installation Media" is still inop, though. I'm going to scan the database, and if it hasn't been posted yet I'll enter a separate report for that.

Thanks.
