If it's relevant, it might be worth noting that I'm using libxine1 from packman. I get this problem as well when playing sounds in KDE4 System Settings when trying to set up system notification sounds. In my case it may be related to my not having sound properly configured out of the box. I have a ThinkPad T-60 which uses the snd-hda-intel driver. In YaST2, this is detected properly, but when even after playing with the mixer volumes, I get no sound. I'm reporting this issue separately, but thought it might be connected to System Settings crashing.
