Description Adam Howarth 2008-06-02 08:48:00 UTC
I think this is a KDE4 problem. What happens is that system sounds play fine for awhile in the KDE4 desktop. Then after a period of desktop use, I loose systems sounds being played by KDE4. However, I am still able to play wav files so I think the sound system is still up itself.

When it fails I sometimes get a brief message overlayed on the top right section of my monitor that does not give me much time to read it before it goes - but it does say something about phonon and falling back on my Audigy 2 card.

I have tried going through various logs but did not find anything of relevance.

I can confirm this bug, The message says the sound interface [insert your SC here] has failed, falling back to esound.

All my music, videos and Internet videos still produce sound, But I'm pretty sure I do lose system sounds....I can not confirm steps to reproduce as it seems random.

An easy way to replicate this crash is to quickly cycle through the various desktops in the pager applet. This will always result in the phonon sound crash.
Comment 4 Adam Howarth 2008-06-10 04:17:36 UTC
Unfortunately this is occuring more often in RC2Plus AMD64 KDE. I am finding that 90% of the time on user login the login event sound causes the Phonon crash message to occur.

Is pulseaudio running in your KDE4 session? ps ax | grep -i pulse
Comment 6 Brandon Kruse 2008-07-07 00:08:21 UTC
output:
 4977 ? Ssl 0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --log-target=syslog -Lmodule-esound-compat-spawnfd fd=51
Comment 7 Will Stephenson 2008-07-16 21:31:56 UTC
I can reproduce this when triggering many kopete brief notifications together. No pulseaudio.
