Description kevin vandeventer 2008-06-03 00:19:22 UTC
I posted this originally in bug #395397 but Michal Zugek suggested I create a separate one so here it is.

I also got the 'only partly supported' message when I installed RC1 with KDE4
and an Epson C88 ink jet but no error message. This printer worked in Beta 3.

When I printed a test page all I got was text like this:

/SEXTANT {% Draw a color wheel sextant...
% (name) white radius r g b SEXTANT -
% Loop through 100 shades...
0 0.010101 0.98 {

After three pages of this I stopped it. When I try to print anything other than
a test sheet, nothing happens and there are no jobs in the queue.

In the Cups printing utility, it lists the printer driver as Local Raw Printer.
It lists the printer state as idle, accepting jobs.

In the YaST printer config tool, it lists the device as Epson/Stylus/C88, model
unknown.

If I go to configure>basic settings and click change model, I can select Epson
and C88 from the list. Then it shows the model as Epson C88.

The gutenprint driver for epson is listed in the driver field. I clicked add
driver but nothing happened. I clicked print test page and nothing happened. I
clicked finish and it saved the configuration. When I launched YaST printer
configuration again, it said model unknown again.

YaST2 logs to follow.

YaST2 logs re: Epson printer

Attaching the y2logs. By the way, following the instructions for attaching y2logs, using Shift-F8 didn't do anything. Hope this works.

The message was "This printer won't be autoconfigured because it's not fully supported". After you click on "Select Model", it should be configured properly, right?

As in bug #395397, the message was something like "the printer is only _partly_ supported". I don't remember it saying anything about autoconfigured. By the way, I unselect the autoconfig option when I do an install.

To answer your question, what I describe above is what happens when I click on 'Select Model'. The next time I open YaST printer utility, it's back to 'model unknown' and the printer doesn't print and there are no jobs in the queue.

Also from your comment in bug #395397:

"fixed in yast2-printer-2.17.0
for printers that are not fully supported:
- on running system only warning popup
- during installation - not be configured"

I haven't been able to find this version of yast2-printer in any of the repos so I haven't tried it. I don't understand the last two lines.

Do you mean after the system is running and configured, I will get a pop up warning that the printer is not fully supported?

During the installation the printer will not be configured?

This appears to be resolved in the final version of 11.0. I got the message "This printer won't be autoconfigured because it's not fully supported", but after I configured it with YaST the printer is working.

There is new yast2-printer module which fixes most of the bugs. If this problem occurs in this version, please reopen bugreport.
