I don't think it's related to EXA in place, since our default for intel driver is XAA. More likely it's related to the use of AIGLX/compiz. What you can try is to use Xgl instead. See also our Release Notes: =============================================================================== Xgl Versus AIGLX On openSUSE 11.0 it is no longer possible to enable or disable Xgl with a graphical tool (such as gnome-xgl-settings in the past). Only the command line tool xgl-switch is still left to do this job. Instead AIGLX is now always enabled on supported hardware. There are still some issues with AIGLX (e.g., Xvideo is usually slower, OpenGL applications are misplaced when you rotate compiz' cube), but the majority of our customers are requesting to have AIGLX enabled by default. If you prefer Xgl over AIGLX use the command line tool xgl-switch to enable it: xgl-switch --enable-xgl If there are problems after enabling it (Xserver crashes, etc.) disable it again by running xgl-switch --disable-xgl The proprietary NVIDIA driver needs neither AIGLX nor Xgl for running with compositing managers as it provides its own framework. =============================================================================== Let me know, if this helps. Gave the XGL option a try but with no luck, but on the plus side there was no problem starting the X server. I am still having the same problems with overall slowdown and difficulty with scrolling, video, etc. Although opensuse 11 uses XAA and not EXA I believe the problem is still related/similar. Having scanned the opensuse.org forums it seems that multiple users are having the same issue. If there is some useful info that I can provide in the form of logs, let me know. Sure. The performance with compiz and video playback is not the issue, the issue is that these two things can work perfectly well together and there is no reason opensuse should be the exception. I have just switched over from Ubuntu where there was a similar performance problem with compiz, but they somehow managed to resolve it. If there was some other helpful information that I could provide, I certainly would. The ubuntu version was 8.04 LTS Desktop 64bit. So this was with AIGLX or with Xgl active? What does Ubuntu 8.04 use? AIGLX or Xgl? I was using aiglx and ubuntu 8.04 also uses aiglx, by default, as well. Ok. So this should be at least a comparable setup. Yep yep. Can you please reset compiz to default and test? I can reproduce the XV issue on my 965GM. With the EXA options in place it works fine. Still the 965GM (8086:2a02) is blacklisted in compiz-manager. See http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Hardware/Blacklist why. :-) Hmm, setting exa options provided no improvement on my laptop, and although video can be played using xv while running exa it cannot be done at fullscreen. The default settings in opensuse 11 to use XAA makes using XV impossible, and at the same time using EXA and XV is too slow to be practical. I was under the impression that the intel video driver provided acceleration for XV and that is why compiz and video/scrolling/flash could be used at the same time. I came across this link as well. BTW, ' Option "ExaNoComposite" "false" ' is the default for EXA anyway. # man EXA Option "EXANoComposite" "boolean" Disables acceleration of the Composite operation, which is at the heart of the Render extension. Not related to the Composite extension. Default: No. After reading the comments in exa/exa_migration.c "greedy" sounds like a safe option to me for a default (instead of "always"). It will allow us to switch back to "EXA" for the "intel" driver. I'll attach a patch to make "greedy" the new default. Still it won't help the original reporter, but remaining EXA performance issues needs to be handled by Intel upstream developers (bugs.freedesktop.org). Created attachment 227611 [details]

An update of xorg-x11-server/xorg-x11-driver-video for openSUSE 11.0 will be available soon, which switches intel back to EXA and makes greedy the default heuristic. The update procedure will be handled in Bug #400788. Please do not reopen this bugreport.
