During the installation, there's a "system probing" page. On this page, a few icons appear which correspond to the current probe. Those icons are mostly random as it seems: for example the system tools icon for "usb" and a monitor with gears for "fire wire"? IMHO all of those icons can be improved to actually reflect what they mean. Also, some of the harddisk related icons/states can probably be merged?

This shows the current dialog and also a few concept suggestions for better icons, e.g. the official usb and firewire logos, theme spec icons for floppy, hard disk and system installer.

We actually use those icons we have in YaST. Anyway, enhancement.

I intend to provide the needed artwork. I don't agree on the enhancement bit. It's just plain inappropriate use of icons as screen estate fill-up.

I've commited some new additions to the yast theme. I suggest using these icons for the system probing page in the installer:

Probe USB devices                         : yast-usb.png
Probe Firewire devices                    : yast-firewire.png
Probe Floppy disk devices                 : yast-floppy.png
Probe harddisk controllers                : yast-hdd-controller.png
Load kernel modules for hdd  controllers  : yast-hdd-controller-kernel-module.png
Probe hard disks                          : yast-hdd.png
Search for linux partitions               : yast-search-linux-partition.png
Search for system files                   : yast-system-files.png
Evaluate update possibility               : yast-update-possibility.png
Initialize package manager                : yast-package-manager.png

In openSUSE Beta3 (as well as SLE 11) those are all using the same icon (user?). Is this already fixed for factory/beta4?

Those files mentioned in comment #5 are missing in Beta3 inst-sys. See /var/log/YaST2/y2log (during installation) and you'll see that (file not found). A user icon is just a fallback.
