This behavior was intentionally changed after discussing this with the yast team and following their recommendation. We now match the default behavior of the KDE updater and zypper which by default only show patches as available updates. There are good arguments for and against showing package updates also and the KDE updater does allow you to configure the applet to show package updates in a separate list - although that option does not work when using the PackageKit backend. The GNOME PackageKit updater lacks that option - we need to look into this more - possibly by providing a button into YaST ? I think we probably need to allow for this option somehow, but its an enhancement. Changing this post release was not ideal however *** Bug 461647 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** I allowed myself dumping the openSUSE version this bug applies to. "Show package updates" would be really useful... Especially for lazy people like my who hate opening YaST only to update packages if updater's in system tray. The option "Show available upgrades when the backend provides them" in the KDE updater does not correctly work with the ZYpp plug-in either in openSUSE 11.1 (see bug 481112). It is my impression that providing update notifications for third-party repositories (which don't use the patch functionality) is not desired by openSUSE developers at the moment. I think that this is a bad idea, because using repositories like Packman is very common among openSUSE users and the only way to get notified about updates there is to start YaST/zypper manually or switch to third-party software managers. This behavior was changed in PackageKit applet for openSUSE 11.4 11.1 is out of support, but closing this bug as fix, since current version have this enhancement. |
