Description Igor Klechkovsky 2008-09-12 07:29:21 UTC
Please update iscan to last version 2.11.0.
Comment 2 Johannes Meixner 2008-09-25 11:34:24 UTC
Higher versions than 2.10 are not backward compatible.

This means models which require a proprietary plugin
of iscan 2.10 do no longer work with a higher version.
Because of this regression we cannot upgrade.
Please contact Avasys for any questions regarding
their proprietary mess.

Upgrade is not possible because Avasys
does not provide all proprietary plugins
for iscan versions higher than 2.10.

See the "incompatible iscan-2.11.0" mail thread on
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/2008-April/
for example
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/2008-April/021783.html
--------------------------------------------------------------------
does not work with *any* of the plugins that have a version number
less than 2.1. Please use iscan-2.10.0 if you need such a plugin.

The problem is not the actual incompatibility.
The problem is that ... the other plugins are not available ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------
For the most up-to-date status (still the same mess) see:
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/2008-September/022837.html
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Beware though that older plugin using models (still) do not work
with iscan-2.11 or later. Use iscan-2.10 instead.

Comment 3 Igor Klechkovsky 2008-09-26 10:12:08 UTC
Unfortunately removing of iscan-2.10.0 non-oss is not possible. But iscan-free may be upgraded. And iscan-2.11.0 non-oss may be added for scanners without plugins. It is correct?
Comment 4 Johannes Meixner 2008-09-26 10:51:21 UTC
I cannot upgrade iscan-free without running into possible trouble
because currently the YaST scanner module is not prepared
when iscan and iscan-free have different versions
(I use only one kind of model description file in YaST).

For openSUSE after 11.1 I will think about if iscan
and iscan-free could have different versions.
Therefore I close it as "FEATURE" now.

Please contact Avasys for any questions regarding
their versioning mess.
I mean this very seriously.
Write mails to Avasys to make them aware when their
customers do not like their versioning mess.
It does not help when only a few people from
Linux distributors write to them.
Only those who buy (or do no longer buy) their scanners
might have hopefully sufficient influence.
