Can you try doing what your kernel asked you to do: PnPBIOS: Warning! Your PnP BIOS caused a fatal error. Attempting to continue PnPBIOS: You may need to reboot with the "pnpbios=off" option to operate stably PnPBIOS: Check with your vendor for an updated BIOS If you boot with that option enabled, does it all work? Is there a new bios update for this hardware available? pnpbios=off helps, but only with SATA drives.
The ETH1 network issue is still there:
I tried to reboot the machine with the option "pnpbios=off".
The SATA drives work well now, but the bug with the ETH1 card (8139too) painfully remains :

Needless to say, the eth1 card works fine with another operating system, or I wouldn't be able to mail this. :-/

I think I have a similar problem but with /dev/sr0 and my RTL8111C NIC works fine. I also experienced shutdown failures. My logs are attached to https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=440891 pata_acpi is grabbing 1f.2 before ahci does and pata_acpi can't really drive the controller properly. This is caused by missing modules.order (bnc#440986). But considering the general quality of BIOS ACPI implementations, it doesn't look like a good idea to enable pata_acpi by default. I'll disable it. Thanks. Sorry, but... Directly connected to my 8139-ethernet-card is a ARRIS cable modem, model CM450B. It has a ethernet-led, which keeps blinking fast (3 times a sec, approx.) whenever the ethernet connection works, and which stays dark otherwise. Normally, if the cable modem is turned on first, as soon as I switch on the computer, the ethernet LED (of the cable modem) goes on and everything works. But booting some Linux distros, the cablemodem ethernet LED stays off and then I get the famous "Destination host unreachable" error. The only Linux distro and kernel that gets the cablemodem LED _ON_ is "Trinity Rescue Kit 3.3" and it KEEPS staying on even if I reboot and insert another CD of another Linux distro (www.grml.org, www.slax.org, etc.etc.) It is my wild guess that the Trinity Rescue Kit Kernel does just sort of "wake up" the ethernet card. It does so at a very early stage of booting - the cablemodem LED goes on immidately after booting the kernel image file, even before the kernel spits out the first message. I guess it is just setting one single "Wakeup-signal" using SETPCI, but I'm not sure about it. I will reboot and LSPCI and compare several LSPCI outputs whenever the netcard and the cable modem are in "proper" state and when they are in "non-proper" state. The "proper" state, once initialized by Trinity Rescue Kit 3.3, remains, even when hard-resetting the computer with the reset button. I'm not 100% sure, but I think this problem is not generic Are you still able to reproduce with an updated kernel and with pata_acpi disabled? No response for 6 months. Closing as NORESPONSE. |
I tried to run OpenSuse 11.1 Beta 2 Live CD without luck. First, my perfectly working network card eth1 does not work with this version of the Kernel (2.6.27), second, all large SATA-Drives > 750 GB are not properly recognized. Third: only ONE CPU out of 4 are supported?! My Hardware: Intel q6600 quadcore cpu, 4 GB ram, MSI neo3-FR motherboard with ICH10 intel chipset. Several SATA harddisks, one ethernet pci card "realtek 8139". Latest BIOS 1.5 as from MSI.com.tw website. Network card does not work even when properly configured with "ifconfig eth1 10.11.12.13 netmask 255.255.255.0" - router cannot be pinged, error: "destination host unreachable" Note: EVERY hardware (SATA drives, ethernet) works perfectly under Kernel 2.6.25 as used in the "Trinity rescue kit 3.3" Linux distribution.
