Description Nkoli Ukpabi 2008-11-02 18:36:41 UTC
I have a laptop with an ati X700 card. For some reason, the xserver freezes momentarily every few seconds if it's is taxed in the least. For example, when running glxgears, I'll see frame rates similar to this:

2300
2400
1600
2400
2350
1550

If I'm doing stuff that puts little to no strain on X (random browsing or music playing), the freeze is not noticeable, if it's even there at all. If I'm watching videos, both sound and video will freeze every few seconds. If using an application like a mud or chat client where text scrolls through quickly, the screen also freezes every few seconds and it's hard to keep anything I'm typing in order.

I thought initially it was a kde4 problem, so I switched desktop environments. On lighter desktop environments like icewm and lxde, which is what I'm currently using, the freezing happens less often. I can run a chat client with no problems and videos mostly play through smoothly. However, if I open a new window or there's something else going on in the background, the issue returns.

I don't know if there's any relationship with bug 436143 but I do know the issue has been in the factory tree since the first time I installed 11.1, which was from beta 1. I've done a fresh install with all the betas if that matters.
