Description andrea florio 2008-11-28 10:17:30 UTC
if i choose kde3 as DE, lots of NOT NEEDED kde4 packages are installed

i'm talking about kde4-ark, kde4-kget, kde4-kmix, kde4-krdb and kde-krdc, kde4-kopete

ark : kdeutils3
kget : kdenetwork3
kmix : kdemultimedia3-mixer
krdc and krfb : kdenetwork3-vnc

and so on..

the desktop should as clean as possible, and mix kde4 and kde3 applications, when the native kde3 one exist is totally wrong..
Comment 1 Stephan Kulow 2008-11-28 10:33:24 UTC
I have two questions:
a) why?
b) are you going to fix the bugs in the unmaintained kde3 versions?
Comment 2 andrea florio 2008-11-28 10:41:16 UTC
a) because is wasting of time/resources/space to use kde4 application (that have less features than the kde3 ones) when NATIVE ones exist.. is the same to use firefox with wine when the linux one exist.

b) you simply have to fix the default pattern selection, and not packages... because kde3 patterns are provided you simply have to edit some text files... like "Prq" "Prc" "Psg"
Comment 3 andrea florio 2008-11-28 11:29:12 UTC
and btw, i'm not the only one that thing pattern are very bad made:

"
[12:02] <anubisg1> yes i know.. but as i told you, the problem is not kde3.. i'll say same things with other DE not only kde3...
[12:02] <anubisg1> anyway.. will see
[12:11] <cyberorg> explain to him that creating kde3 live CD with just kde3 is a big problem with current patterns
[12:13] <anubisg1> you may want to do.. because if i am the only one that talk i will be ignored..., you know coolo
[12:14] * cyberorg is gnome user :P
[12:14] <anubisg1> hahaa but i work with kiwi/kde3
[12:15] <cyberorg> i have a long list of "delete" in kiwi-ltsp config removing all unnecessary crud added by package deps, i dont use patterns at all
[12:15] <anubisg1> yes, because patterns was made really bad
[12:16] <anubisg1> i'm talking about patternes, i don't care about kde3,kde4, gnome ecc ecc"
Comment 4 Rastislav Krupansky 2008-11-28 13:10:03 UTC
i vote for this bug.
why should i install kde4 stuff when i want to use kde3 and kde3´s equivalents and i´d say in some cases kde3 stuff are more stable (for example Amarok - yes i know, for 11.1 Amarok2 won´t be as default)?
it´s useless and then i have totally mess on system.
Comment 5 Lubos Lunak 2008-11-28 15:05:12 UTC
This problem appears to be pattern-related.
Comment 6 Stephan Kulow 2008-11-28 15:54:47 UTC
Yes, change the component. But the pattern content is 100% from the kde team
Comment 7 andrea florio 2008-11-28 16:22:07 UTC
exactly, the problem is only on patterns... if a kde3 equivalent exist, it should be used, different is the kde4 situation, where some applications are not stable or not mature enought (like k3b, amarok ecc)
Comment 8 andrea florio 2008-11-29 10:44:37 UTC
and btw,

okular in un-needed too.. kde3 have kpdf available in package "kdegraphics3-pdf"
Comment 9 andrea florio 2008-12-02 09:32:09 UTC
any news?
Comment 10 Stephan Binner 2008-12-02 10:10:01 UTC
Some stuff is deliberately chosen (games, krfb/krdc), the rest is dupe of 450161.

Comment #8 is dupe of 450808

openseue 11.1 rc1

i have selected KDE3.5.10 but:

1- the first launch of 'root' start kde4 ... very bad! (i can select in login time kde3...but i have instal os11.1 with kde3!)

2- too many parts of kde4 in kde3 for example:
   kmix4
   krfb/krdc for kde4

I would like to have and work with kde3 and not with a hybrid that does not work well either

Ciao da Andrea
