kde3 and kde4 mix

I installed the KDE3.5 desktop environment (from DVD), but the desktop is a mix of KDE3.5 and KDE4.

The K-menue and the kicker are KDE4 style.
However, konqueror reports me KDE3.5.10

It looks like the KDE3.5 is not fully installed...

Comment 2 Dominik Platz 2008-11-28 19:07:26 UTC
After logging off and choosing manually session type KDE3, then the normal KDE desktop appears.
- session type "standard" is KDE4
- session type "KDE3" is KDE3

I conclude:
- I haven chosen KDE3.5 during installation
- It boots with "standard" session type witch is a mix of KDE4 and KDE3
- I can switch to session type KDE3 to get normal KDE3 desktop.

It shouldn't install kdebase4-workspace at least. This sounds like bug 445972 which should have been fixed in RC1.

This looks like a pattern or resolver bug to me: eg kde4-kwin, kdebase4-workspace, kde4-plasma-addons all are not installed installed because of a package requirement. And for "KDE3 Base System" pattern stuff like kde4-ark is shown in YaST.

5053: U_Ts_(2761)kde4-kget-4.1.3-4.6.i586(tmp) libkgetcore.so.4

No idea why kde4-kget provides kdenetwork3.
Comment 9 Stephan Kulow 2008-11-29 12:08:13 UTC
I changed the patterns to require kdenetwork3 > 3.5.1, which fixed this very problem.

The remaining kde4 apps seem to be there to replace broken kde3 ones:

Part of the SLE obsoletes/provides stuff.

What about the other problems? Why does kdebase4-workspace get installed, why does eg kde4-ark show up in "KDE 3 Base" pattern?

Comment 11 Stephan Kulow 2008-11-29 12:57:54 UTC
kde4-kget requires kdebase4-workspace, kde4-ark provides kdeutils3

The problem still exists in 11.1 final, so I'll reopen it.

Btw: you can switch the Qt4-application-style from KDE4-oxygen to KDE3-platique with qtconfig.

What problem exactly? And please don't highjack random bug reports.

> What problem exactly?

Did you read all the comments/reports above and in the duplicates ???
I installed openSUSE 11.1 on a clean machine with KDE3 only and got KDE4 (which also switches all Qt4-applications to the oxygen style)...

> And please don't highjack random bug reports.

Ahhhm, sorry:
this bug IS REPRODUCIBLE, has been REPORTED BY MANY PEOPLE (we already have 6 duplicates !) and is known for a long time now. So what's "random" about it ???
It is not a severe issue, but it is confirmed/valid and should be handled seriously.

This is definitely not the way you should handle bug reports !
Otherwise people will loose interest in testing/bug-reporting or even the whole product. That's what currently happens with the KDE-project...
Comment 22 Dominik Platz 2009-01-11 19:01:02 UTC
Hi,
I was the bug creator and, of course, I checked whether the bug is solved or not.
It *is* solved with 11.1 final.

Frank, your bug report
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=445503
describes not exactly the same problem which I had.
It was marked as a duplicate which might be wrong.
The other 5 duplicates are correctly marked.

I suggest you to create a new bug please (your #445503 was for beta4)
- add yast log
- add screenshots (a picture is more that 1000 words!)

and, of course, describe what was going wrong and what do you expect.

just my two cents.

Dominik
Comment 23 Frank Schäfer 2009-01-11 22:08:19 UTC
Ahm yes, you're right, I was also the reporter of bug 445503 which is linked as one of the duplicates (I didn't notice).
But that's indeed wrong, 445503 describes a different problem, which has been fixed in 11.1 final.

I've read the 6 remaining reports thoroughly again and I'm not sure if this one (bug 450161) isn't a separte issue, too. The same with bug 450250.

Bug 450169, bug 445972, bug 450295 should be indeed identic and they describe exactly my problem.
Comment 24 Stephan Kulow 2009-01-14 11:53:57 UTC
