Having installed a fresh openSUSE 11.1-RC1 with KDE 3.5 as the desktop environment, KDM4 is set as the default display manager.

Surprisingly KDE4 session starts up immediately even though I see no reason for it to be installed.

Using kdm4 for KDE3 too is a developer/project manager decision. For kdebase4-workspace etc being installed see bug 450161.
