I installed OpenSUSE 11.1 RC1 x86 on a 1024x600 Pixel netbook (Samsung NC10/Atom N270/2GB/160GB). Most things work fine (not the Fn-keys for display brighness, monitor switch etc., but that's a different story).

The menu on the kdm Login Screen that lets you choose the session (kde, gnome, failsafe etc.) is NOT visible because it extends below the screen boundaries.  The mouse can apparently also move below line 599 and select something, but -- needless to say -- selections from item 3 on are difficult to hit.  The word "Session" on which you need to click to open the menu is visible, though.

So: If a menu extends below the screen it may need to be opened upwards, not downwards (drom-down style).

Do you have similar problems with menus while in KDE session? What is the output of 'xrandr' command in the session?

As you can see, the attached files show that KDE 4 assumes 1024x768, possibly because at some time an external monitor was connected (I tried, but contrary to the information in the NC10 manual an external monitor only goes to max. 1024x768).

In KDE4 the problem of missing (off-screen) menus also exists.  There is also no taskbar visible (!!!).

In KDE 3.5 the problem is not there at all.

For comparison, I attached the output of xrandr --query --verbose for both kde versions, the difference is interesting:

Can you find out where happens the change that sets the height reported by xwininfo to be 768? Please try failsafe session from KDM and also switching to GDM or XDM, launching failsafe from there, checking, and running KDE from there (using 'startkde' command).

xwininfo already shows the 768 lines in the login screen.

What seems relevant to me is that KDE 3.5 seems to detect that the only active (!) screen is 600 lines, even if another one is configured (but inactive, since it is not connected).  kdm and KDE 4.1 do not detect this, or do not use this information appropriately.

I also tried failsafe (I believe it is, twm with a blue background.  I tried 10 times to hit the menu item blindly and got KDE4 8 times).  It also has 768 lines, and again lines 600 through 767 are below the screen.  Line 0 is visible.

KDE 3.5.10 rocks!  It is the only system smart enough to give me a taskbar at the lowest visible line of the screen!  xwininfo -root shows 600 lines for the root window here, the only correct result I ever got on this machine.

gdm does not seem to be installed, so I could not test it.  I did not find an option in yast to configure the login screen, either (which one to use, I mean).

Thanks for checking with me.  The bug is still present in kdm from the package kdebase3-kdm-3.5.10-17.4.

Would you like me to check another version?  If so, which one from which repo?

This seems to be fixed at os11.1

Also note that developers are concentrating on KDE4 as it is now the default for openSUSE (thats why I'm here, I'm helping to tidy up the KDE bugs reported at openSUSE).

I'll mark it as fixed meantime because it appears to be so from 11.1 final and I can't find any reports found specifically under KDE4. If you believe it is an bug for kde then you can also report it at bugs.kde.org.
