When the software installer starts updating the list of repositories or updating my configured repositories, I randomly get errors about being unable to download certain files.

There is also a problem with the NVIDIA repository.

At other times all the repositories update without a problem.

Please look at the attached yast2 logs to see specific errors. I tried to add the GNOME community repositories and one of them failed to be added. When I immediately tried to add it again, it succeeded.

Another issue with the "installation sources" GUI, when a repository fails to be added, a check mark is drawn next to its name as its done with the successfully added repositories. Shouldn't a red "x" be drawn instead?

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Looks much more like bad (unstable) network connection issue, there is a bunch of messages like this one in the log:

2009-01-23 07:54:05 <5> inca(9827) [zypp] Exception.cc(log):119 Error code: Connection failed
2009-01-23 07:54:05 <5> inca(9827) [zypp] Exception.cc(log):119 Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'download.opensuse.org'

This can be considered an usability improvement - make repositories which failed to be added somehow visually distinct.

The network was not likely to had been the problem. I would have seen errors in other areas if I had DNS problems and I hadn't.

I had been seeing this behavior at home and at the office.

I have not observed the behavior lately.

Yes, it seems that there was a network problem.

Yast should display a different symbol for failed repositories.

Sorry, no time to implement this enhancement.

(The check mark actually means that the step has been finished, it doesn't indicated the result.)
