Just my two cents on this recurring problem. In my experience this only happens when the DVD drive used to write the DVD is a different drive than the one used to install from, and the computer you are installing to is a fast computer. It appears that the installation program drives the DVD drive so heavily that a read error eventually occurs which Linux does not properly recover from. This problem should be fixed in my opinion, but my solution is to install from a copy on disk, or using NFS.

Just my $0.02
Comment 2 Scott Couston 2009-02-03 21:35:59 UTC
Comment #2 Marks perfect sense and is probably very accurate and worth its weight in Gold rather than two cents.

I would love to see this fixed - I will try to make a copy of the DVD, however it is not possible to do an NFS install in 11.1 as we all know
Comment 3 Mark Gray 2009-02-04 09:50:00 UTC
I did two NFS installs of 11.1 so far, and plan to do a third as well.

This is the content of the /boot/grub/menu.lst entry I used to upgrade the computer I am typing this on now:

title openSUSE-11.1 ssh install
    root (hd0,3)
    kernel /boot/linux-11.1-32bit usessh=1 sshpassword=password \
    install =nfs://10.0.0.13/SDB2/ARK/11.1/32bit.iso
    initrd /boot/initrd-11.1-32bit

All of my computers now use DHCP, but I used to have a section of my LAN which used static IP's and this is the grub entry I used to upgrade one of the computers to 11.0 using a static address:

title openSUSE-11.0 ssh install
    root (hd0,5)
    kernel /boot/linux-11.0-32bit hostip=192.168.96.76 netmask=255.255.255.0 \
    gateway =192.168.96.76 \
    usessh =1 sshpassword=password \
    install =nfs://192.168.96.72/SDB2/ARK/11.0/32bit.iso
    initrd /boot/initrd-11.0-32bit

Hope this helps.
Comment 4 Scott Couston 2009-02-04 20:11:31 UTC
Try it when DHCP Services do NOT exist on the target PC - NFS will then revert to text. Text does now not load default drivers and you will have to supply every drivers. I had complete success using NFS text installation in all the version 10.n. But in all the 11.n Installations I have not discovered which default drivers I need to load for text NFS. Also the text installation remembers values previously entered - thats normal but when I see the exported directory being transposed into the search domain DNS Server fields I am worried - I cannot get a NFS Installation to work correctly on X_64 hardware in ALL 11.n Installations and the issue you clearly noted in comment #1 is not acceptable. To have an software installation dependent on differing hardware media is poor. Also I am not running ssh services so I cannot depend on them.
Comment 5 Mark Gray 2009-02-04 20:28:16 UTC
I actually have not tried static ip's with 11.1 (true) but have you tried adding:

hostip=nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn netmask=255.255.255.0

to the boot line when booting the installation kernel?

(Probably should have kept my mouth shut since I no longer need the static ip's on my network, but it worked for all prior versions (really!))

(I use ssh to install on those computers so I can install remotely now while sitting in a nice comfortable chair -- I used to use the text install.)
Comment 6 Scott Couston 2009-02-05 05:16:55 UTC
Mark your help here has been invaluable in respect to the Media issues. In an NFS GUI Installation I too have just entered the NFS Server IP and NetMask and Exported Directory. The GUI has reverted then to text and there are NO DHCP Services and I have to force a gateway IP.
Text used to work just fined in 10.n but in 11.n I need to provide all the drivers in the setting part of the text install. I need to manually load the Network/Disk/display drivers that are auto-loaded during full GUI install. Try the text install in 11.n - you will see the problems.
Unfortunately I cannot run ssh - my LAN is probably more secure than your local banks for a good reason - but that's a long story and not relevant!

Please never apologize for your very good contribution.

Bring back the exact same install as 10.n - The new install is very poor in the respect that it presumes a typical environment of ? which may not be there and often isn't.
Comment 7 Mark Gray 2009-02-05 19:42:45 UTC
I just did a static ip, textmode nfs install of 11.1 using the following grub entry:

title openSUSE-11.1 install
    root (hd0,2)
    kernel /boot/linux-11.1-32bit showopts vga=0x374 \
    	   hostip=10.0.0.9 netmask=255.0.0.0 \
	   gateway=10.0.0.9 textmode=1 \
	   install=nfs://10.0.0.13/SDB2/ARK/11.1/32bit.iso
    initrd /boot/initrd-11.1-32bit

(The vga=0x374 is for 1600x1200 display, use something different such as vga=ask if your display and video card cannot do 1600x1200).

RE: #1 From Mark - All the CD/DVD that exhibit this same issue are purchased from LinuxCD - Although the CD/DVD creation definitely brings about this installation error bug - I think we need to either advise LinuxCD as that company is responsible for the very cheap mass production of ALL Distros.

The private contact for LinuxCD CEO is

Guillaume@imingo.net

He is the creator and now CEO of a huge company, very easy to talk to and has a pure technical mind - If you need to communicate to this organization use the CEO's Private Address here - I cannot add this address to CC field in this bug web site address are:-

Email Normal queries to

LinuxCD.org@imingo.net

ALL CD/DVD's from LinuxCD will cause this error in Installation - We need to fix our side of the Installation and advise LinuxCD of any changes they may need to make and notify LinuxCD about this issue once it has been verified and we have sent out a patch update for our install program bug and/or other advise same info to LinuxCD's CEO
Comment 11 Scott Couston 2009-02-28 23:59:07 UTC
This still exists in production of all opensuse DVD's by comment #10 - Questions for you is do we fix the install that will fall over every time I use one of these DVD's or if you fix Installation issue - re-assigning to 11.1
Comment 12 Cyril Hrubis 2009-03-13 12:15:31 UTC
Failed read from DVD could be either broken hardware or kernel bug. Could you attach output from dmesg after such error.
Comment 13 Scott Couston 2009-03-17 08:22:18 UTC
My apologies for my 2 weeks absence, I got flooded out in my region and am only getting things slowly back together.
I will supply details from today +7 - Leave on Needinfo

I have saved a copy of the output from 3 X_64 PC's I have.
The first X64 PC 01 does exhibit this issue no matter what I try to install however V11.0 is currently running on this PC.
The second 02 does exhibit this issue no matter what I try to install however V11.1 is currently running on this PC
The third 03 DOES NOT exhibit this issue however V11.0 is currently running on this PC.

Well these messages aren't showing any problems. Are they captured after this particular error has occurred?
Comment 20 Scott Couston 2009-04-01 14:36:24 UTC
Error was re-typed painfully letter by letter from when the DVD was over half way in installing files in new installation as an Abort/Retry/Cancel type dialog the text was painfully retyped and checked 3 times from the reason below the A/R/F dialogue.
Comment 21 Scott Couston 2009-04-02 04:10:37 UTC
Additional info - The Factory Suse DVD has no issue with any such problems. Its only every DVD from supplier that I have got from them since 10.3. In the case I only use the DVD supplier I copy the contents of the DVD to an Install Server - all O.K

Then I download and burn my own ISO Network Installation from suse.de.

IF I use the DVD from the supplier to start the Network Install, it fails as it is unable to mount the Installation Repository from DVD due a very log error string - but summarised as a read/possibly verify reason. I thought I was just getting bad CD in the past and then Bad DVD now - But there must be so much more in it that that - The media is fine

I tried to perform another 11.1 Installation on another P4 HT PC and an X_64 PC of 2 of my friends - This same problem was encountered. This problem normally happens when Install attempts to create its first repository being the Installation DVD and the selected software - its right after the final Install is clicked and the GUI starts to save the software selections and other information that the user indicates before and is presented as Total Installation Summary (that is editable) but once the user proceeds after this the error occurs.

On these 2 other PC's I tried the 11.1 Installation using the same media. I only got the sub-processor fail.....message after the first repository source DVD had been constructed and Install had started part way of coping and installing the files...The only option available to the user is to abort the Installation and use Media that comes from the Opensuse retail box.

ALL the DVD's that come from this vendor all exhibit this failure time after time since 11.0's new Installation format or was it 10.3.

On running a Media check the DVD media is perfectly fine - whats the difference? - I dont know, however there is much more learned opinion above in other comments.

Perhaps we need to talk to the vendor of Linix CD via the net.

I don't feel responsible for Linix CDs, I don't think we have any contract with them, so if you have a problem with their media you should contact them

Fully agreed. I just sent LinuxCD.org a mail about this issue and close the bug.
