This also occurs in GNOME/GDM installed from x86_64 Milestone 1 DVD.

I believe it happens due to messages from components being outputted to either the stderr or stdout. In my case, my wireless card driver (b43) is having troubles:
"b43-phy0 ERROR: PHY transmission error" - but that is another matter.

In openSUSE 11.0 at least, these were redirected to the console *behind* the X screen (ie, you can see them if you stop X running and move to Ctrl-Alt-F7).

I'm seeing this myself. It shows up in Gnome if I log in normally and log out. That's when the window shows up, on the login screen. When I log in again, it is still there. As with comment #3, the output tends to be network related (in my case my wireless adapter is having issues).

Considering that I can't use Ctrl-Alt-F7 in 11.2 to get at the stuff that used to be on that screen, the console output is actually useful at this stage.

It seems to be fixed in Milestone2. This bug can be closed in my case.
