When installing I chose "disable firewall" and disabled automatic configuration. After reboot YaST had forgotten about the firewall setting and fell back to the default of enabling it.

Known bug. It was my oversight due to which it still does not work in non-automatic 2nd stage. It is fixed, but did not make M8 (see bug 534862, last comment)
