I have auto login configured for kdm (KDE 4.3.whatevercomeswithRC1) but it doesn't auto-login.

It worked with kde 4.3.X with openSUSE 11.1

Configured how/where?

Personal Settings -> System -> Login Manager

Then, Convenience tab -> Eanble Auto-Login (and pick the user here)

You can edit /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager.
