Description John Roberts 2009-10-25 18:13:08 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090909 SUSE/3.5.3-3.2 Firefox/3.5.3

Installation from a 11.2RC1 KDE LiveCD. A data CD on either of the two optical drives is not mounted automatically (as if unrecognizable). Manual mounting
through console works. Other media tested like Audio CDs and DVDs are auto-mounted normally.

Tried to add the user group to cdrom and disk groups w/o any change in results.

The contents of /etc/fstab is as follows:

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD2500AAJB-00J3A0_WD-WCAV23999926-part7 swap swap defaults 0 0

proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0

Same behavior on both optical drives. Manual mounting on either device does work.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Insert Data CD
2.
3.
Actual Results:
The optical drives read the CD and then nothing happens. Notifier does not show new media and the same applies to sysinfo. No new medium is visible. Same applies to Dolphin.

Expected Results:
Normally notify about the new media

Seems to be hardware related.
After some test, I replaced the SONY DDU1612 DVD-ROM
with a SONY/Optiarc AD-7200A DVD-RW. It appears that
on this drive the CD is automounted normally.
Further testing with the DVD-ROM on Windows did not
show any malfunction. Must be a strange combination
of software-hardware-media glitch. Will revert with
further testing with same media, as soon as I install
11.2 on more rigs...

I also encountering similar problem. Seems HAL fails to detect DVD-writer after installation of 11.2 64 bit.

See forum thread link below for more details.

While PC was on and lshal -m was running, I removed the SATA cable and reattached it. After reattachment lshal -m detected the DVD writer.

Danny, this looks like a HAL issue to me. Do you have any idea what's wrong or how to debug that? Thanks

I don't know what I can do here. Moreover, it looks like duplicate of bug 551753.
