Description Freek de Kruijf 2010-06-21 16:30:05 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; nl; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 SUSE/3.6.3-1.2 Firefox/3.6.3

In the first screen pressing F2 choosing Dutch(Nederlands) shows in the next screen a Dutch keyboard. Going to the keyboard selection in the Language menu and choosing there also English(US) always gives you in the next screen next to the Dutch language the Dutch keyboard. Most of the keyboards used in the Netherlands are English(US) keyboards, so the default should be English(US). This was the behaviour in previous openSUSE distributions.
The Dutch keyboard mainly has non-alphabetic and non-numeric keys under different keys on the keyboard.
Apparently this has been changed in RC1, it was as before in M7.

Freek do you mean configuration in boot screen (GRUB) or do you mean configuration of language in installation (YaST2)?
Comment 2 Freek de Kruijf 2010-06-22 19:01:16 UTC
It is right in the beginning on the first screen, so I assume it is GRUB, where I choose Nederlands (Dutch) using F2. After that in YaST2 the chosen language is obviously Nederlands(Dutch), however in contrast with the past, the default keyboard is also Nederlands (Dutch), this used to be Engels(VS) English(US) and it should remain that way.
In the language choise, F2, there is a last new menu item about a keyboard, it is quite unclear how to use that, you can't choose a language _and_ a keyboard. I tried two time F2, first choosing the language and the second time chosing the keyboard, but the choise for the English(US) keyboard there was not honored later in YaST2. I still had to change the keyboard there to English(US), otherwise I can't enter a slash in a change I had to make in the partition module.

There is a problem with missing configuration of keyboard from YaST2 also to GRUB configuration.

There was a change that after your changing language is also change default keyboard and it leads sometimes to troubles because you accepted default keyboard English (US).

yast2-country is YaST2 module where you can setup language, keyboard and others but it is for X.

yast2-bootloader takes settings from yast2-country and saved it also to GRUB configuration special to gfxboot configuration but there is a problem. It doesn't include keyboard settings. :( There is FATE request for it fate#309253. It is a regular feature.

I am sorry but this a regression from a change between Milestone 7 and RC1, so please make this change undone.
Comment 5 Jozef Uhliarik 2010-06-24 12:32:37 UTC
Sorry you confused me with mixing GRUB and YaST2. My comment#3 includes existing problem with settings keyboard layout in GRUB. It was not changed in Milestone 7 but sooner.

You are right there was a change in yast2-country and if you select Dutch language your keyboard layout is also changed to Dutch. See bug#603955

I am sorry but it is not possible to satisfy all users special if their requirements are antagonistic.

I have no access to bug#603955. I wonder who entered this as a bug or request.
