This might be related to Bug #603131 but my problem still persists.

I've updated cups, hplip and ghostscript using the opensuse repositories Printing and Printing:ghostscript, as the printer HP Photosmart Premium c309g requires a newer version of hplip to function. However, after using hp-setup to configure the printer it never managed to print anything but black pages.

I can see no error messages regarding cups but since the printer is connected via ethernet I can intercept the data sent to the printer which consists almost entirely of lines of
 *b0V*b0W*b0V*b0W*b0V*b0W*b0V*b0W*b0V*b0W*b0V
which I guess encodes black?

Reproducible: Always

I am afraid we cannot help you here because
as far as I see it is perhaps a bug in the driver
for this particular model in HPLIP but
we neither have your printer model to reproduce it
nor do we have the model-specific knowledge to fix
such kind of bugs in the driver.

Therefore please file a bug report at upstream HPLIP
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/support.html
and please post the URL of the upstream bug report here
so that I could see what goes on there.

If upstream HPLIP responds that it prints well for them,
you could re-open this bug report - perhaps we might
find the root cause but as long as we cannot reproduce it
it is rather unlikely.

Note that HPLIP contains two separated drivers:
The traditional "hpijs" and the newer "hpcups".

In case of bugs with the "hpcups" driver you should try
if it works with the traditional "hpijs" driver.

I assume for a HP Photosmart Premium c309g all-in-one printer
the following PPD files match:

  hp-photosmart_premium_c309g-m-hpijs.ppd.gz
"HP Photosmart Premium c309g-m hpijs, 3.10.2rc1.9"

  hp-photosmart_premium_c309g-m.ppd.gz
"HP Photosmart Premium c309g-m, hpcups 3.10.2rc1.9"

If you currently use "HP Photosmart Premium c309g-m, hpcups ..."
try out if "HP Photosmart Premium c309g-m hpijs ..." works.

If "HP Photosmart Premium c309g-m hpijs ..." works, please also
file a bug report at upstream HPLIP regarding the
"only prints black pages" issue with the hpcups driver.

Thank you very much, the other driver hp-photosmart_premium_c309g-m-hpijs.ppd.gz indeed solves the problem.

I've reported the problem with hp-photosmart_premium_c309g-m.ppd.gz at
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/617332

Only for information:

See

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I print web site pages, the embedded photographs come out
in inverted colors on my Photosmart C7280. Even when I download
a jpeg picture and print it, it has inverted colors
...
But when I take that pictures (which prints inverted colors)
and copy the jpg file to a usb stick and print the picture directly
from the usb stick in the printer it is OK!.
...
The driver used was H"P Photosmart 7200, hpcups..."
and changing it to
"HP Photosmart 7200 Series hpijs, 3.10.2rc1.9 (color, 2-sided printing)"
solved the problem.

The new version hplip-3.11.3 seems to fix the bug. I testet hplip-3.11.3 from repo Printing/openSUSE_11.4 together with HP Photosmart C5180. For me, this version works.
