Description Steffen Börm 2010-10-23 09:44:17 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.10) Gecko/20100506 SUSE/3.5.10-0.1 Firefox/3.5.10

Both the KDE and the GNOME shutdown widgets only take me back to the KDM login screen instead of shutting the system down.

Shutting down from KDM usually works, but yesterday it gave me a command line prompt. Logging in as root and using "shutdown -h now" got me "The system is halted", but the computer did not power down. After a moment, I used the power switch to shut down manually.

My system is an i7-920 on an Asus P6T motherboard. Shutdown used to work well in OpenSuSE 11.1, skipped 11.2.

I saw the same problem (KDE shutdown widget leading back to KDM instead of shutting down) on a Dell Latitude notebook running 11.3 in the x86-64 version.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start KDE
2. Klick on red shutdown button
3. Choose "Turn off computer"

Actual Results:
Returns me to the KDM login screen.

Expected Results:
Shut down system and switch off.

If 'shutdown -h' also does not work, this is probably not a KDE bug.

if you want poweroff, use poweroff. Did you change any software?

Since "shutdown -h now" works most of the time, at least there
seems to be an inconsistency.

No, just standard updates via yast.

Maybe there are two independent problems:
1. The KDE and GNOME widgets sometimes seem to fail to tell
   KDM to shut down.
2. The kernel sometimes seems to fail to power off the computer.

I have no idea what to make out of your bug. you seem to be the only one with this problem - sometimes.

Originally I was using KDE, but had GNOME installed as well. Then I switched to GNOME sessions, but was still running KDM. Now I have switched back to KDE, and shutdown seems to work as expected.

Could it be that the GNOME shutdown widget is not able to talk properly to the KDM session manager?

Recently the kernel powers off the computer correctly. Maybe one of the recent kernel updates cleared up this issue.

In this case it is a known upstream bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=244765 . Shutdown form GNOME when using KDM does not work.

If you have the problem (again) with KDE and KDM or GNOME and GDM, please reopen.
