Two panel applets have quit - no panel.

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0b7) Gecko/20101105 Firefox/4.0b7

Installed openSUSE factory-tested 2.6.37-rc5-12-desktop GNOME 2.32.1.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
0. updated with Software Manager to 2.6.37-rc5-12-desktop and so on...
1.Log in GNOME as user one
2.Log out (with Alt+F1) and log in again as user one
3.Log in as user two

Actual Results:
1.Log in GNOME as user one - no panel, no desktop items
2.Log out (with Alt+F1) and log in again as user one - desktop items but no panel
3.Log in as user two -> panel and but no
4.gnome-terminal: "nm-applet
An instance of nm-applet is already running."
5. YasT2>NetworkSettings turn to tradition methode
-> LAN works
6. turn back to NetworkManager -> no aplett shown but network stays
7. gnome-terminal: "nm-applet
An instance of nm-applet is already running."

Expected Results:
GNOME panel works, GNOME networkmanager-applet is shown and works

(before that updating via zypper up but not kernel packages (muliversion) updated):

Probably connected with the GNOME bug that happend just before to nm-applet while updating via graphic Software Manager in YaST2.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=637126

"
Now the applet for the GNOME networkmanager is not shown but seems to run (and
connect both to LAN and wireless LAN)

~> nm-applet
An instance of nm-applet is already running.

Comment 1 Martin Seidler 2010-12-13 14:34:48 UTC
After rebooting the panel is there again but the NetworkManager-Applet is still hiding:
"~> nm-applet
An instance of nm-applet is already running.

Should I change the component to the D-Bus?
Do you need any more information?
Should I try to reinstall any special package?

Red Hat Bugzilla – Bug 657451
gnome-applets crashe sometimes in startup.

Should I change the title of the bug report or/and the component to DBus ?

Do you, by any chance, have accessibility enabled for the user that has the issue?
Comment 6 Martin Seidler 2011-02-24 14:34:04 UTC
In the last 2 and a bit month my factory-tested installation has a bit changed since openSUSE 11.4 Milestone 5 of 6. But there seems to be a quite similar bug reported on the factory list now for 11.4 RC1:
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2011-02/msg00766.html
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2011-02/msg00755.html

Should I install 11.4 Milestone 5 or Release Candidate 1 over my factory-tested installation and try if I would be able to reproduce that failure of the GNOME panel/network manager again?

???

I think I had completely misunderstood you question while writing comment 6.

I do not recall changing anything for that user(s) that had the problem - only the user 1000 was probably enabled to [x] receive system mails in the standard installation process.

And the other users are still existing on my installed factory-tested system - maybe the needed information is hidden from me ignorant one in any log???

I only see now in the reports posted here:

Is there anywhere a description how to determine (and change?) the current/previous status of that meant "accessibility" ?
Could it be that someone changed the default settings of that "accessibility" for a new user in the updated packages in the time past Milestone 5?

The search in the GNOME help for "accessibility"
(on the 11.3 system I am currently logged in)
gave me among other hits:
file:///usr/share/gnome/help-bundle/gdm/de/gdm.xml#accessibilitygconfconfiguration

> 5.6.2. GConf-Schlüssel der Barrierefreiheit
>
> GDM bietet die folgenden GConf-Schlüssel zur Steuerung der Barrierefreiheit:
> Konfigurationsschlüssel von GDM

> /desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility
> [...]

Was something like that meant with accessibility?

???

I think not
(and after all users GNOME login appeared that malfunction in the beginning):

# gconftool-2 --get "/desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility"
false

user 1000:

~> gconftool-2 --get "/desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility"
false
Comment 9 Martin Seidler 2011-02-24 17:05:11 UTC
user 1002:
gconftool-2 --get "/desktop/gnome/interface/accessibility"
false

user 1001:

The nm-applet just only allow one running, this message cause that you have run the nm-applet in the first user. If you wanna disable it, run the 'gnome-session-properties" in the terminal, then cancel the selection of 'NetworkManager', after that you'll not see the log anymore.

Actually (2 and a half month after the report) I have not more problems connected to this bug (see comment 6) - not with the networkmanager and its helpers nor with the panel. If the bug reported by Larry for RC1 is not connected to this one and I could not help giving any more information I think this report can be closed.

Okay, thanks for the update. Let's close it then, and we'll reopen if it occurs again.
