Xorg.0.log

11.4m5 on a HP Probook 6555b, logs in bug #661953

A default gnome installation shows only a black sreen when X is running. The mouse pointer is shown, and also the gnome busy-mouse pointer and the cursor of the screen blanker.
All applications appear to run normal according to 'ps faux'.

A default kde install looks ok, so the black screen is gnome specific.

Please try again with boot option 'nomodeset' (--> radeonhd driver). If that doesn't help also uninstall xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd package (--> UMS radeon driver).

nomodeset as boot option helps
Comment 6 Olaf Hering 2011-01-03 13:58:03 UTC
I have to add, from the KDE session I installed the gnome pattern and logged out to kdm, then logged into a gnome session. This led to the effect that the kdm splash screen or background remained on screen and gnome started but did not display anything but the cursor variants.
