The previous (i.e. in 11.3) option in kmix to switch to another input device is now completely missing. Before, this setting was just annoying because it was not persistent but always changed back to the default Line-In device. However, the complete lack to be able to use e.g. the internal microphone in a laptop is definitely worse ;)

Just a general remark: the new kmix application is horrible. To say the least.

Is there a way to change these sound settings in a config file or with a utility such as alsamixer?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. line-in audio capture works out of the box
2. there is no configuration to change this to e.g. built-in microphone

Actual Results:
This is equivalent to a broken sound system as users need to plug an external microphone in order to use VoIP apps (skype, googletalk, twinkle, sip-communicator etc.)

Expected Results:
The mixer applet kmix should offer easy and intuitive checkboxes to switch playback and recording devices easily.

This is thanks to pulseaudio, see the other report.
