Installed VirtualBox from Oracle's Virtualbox's repository and noticed that

- VirtualBox works (good)
- Computer can shut down (good)
- Computer can power up (good0

- Computer CANNOT restart and goes back into KDE. Restart will bring you into terminal where startx will not work.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Tried 3 reinstallation and finally noticed what is causing the problem -

1. Install openSUSE 11.4 AMD64 KDE
2. Add VirtualBox repsitory (http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/rpm/opensuse/11.4)
3. Install Virtualbbox (zypper in VirtualBox-4.0)

4a. Leave -> Shut down.
4b. Start computer by pressing power computer, openSUSE will present kdm, user can login and use as per normal

5a. Leave -> Restart
5b. Computer will restart but kdm wil not be presented. You will be in terminal mode.
5c. login as normal user and startx will NOT work.
5d. login as root and startx will bring up KDE

Actual Results:
Restart in opensuse will goes to grub then goes to terminal.

Expected Results:
Can restart in openSUSE and should goes to grub, then kdm.

This seems to be the error message if I do not get KDM:

xauth: file /home/****//.serverauth.1881 does not exist

Fatal Server Error:
Cannot move old log file "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old"

To the other users that face the same problem :

zypper remove xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveau

Seems to do the trick for me.

Long time no response. So closed.Feel free to reopen it.Thanks.
Comment 5 Christian Boltz 2012-03-17 00:13:18 UTC
Nobody reassigning the bug to the responsible developer is not what "noresponse" is made for. Reopening and reassigning to Stefan because this looks like a nouveau issue.
Comment 6 Stefan Dirsch 2012-03-19 11:12:13 UTC
That's just a permission problem. I don't see how this is related to nouveau driver.

/etc/permissions.local
[...]
# setuid bit on Xorg is only needed if no display manager, ie startx
# is used. Beware of CVE-2010-2240.

#/usr/bin/Xorg                 root:root       4711
Comment 7 Stefan Dirsch 2013-03-05 10:25:42 UTC
openSUSE 11.4 is no longer supported. Feel free to reopen, if the issue still exists with openSUSE 12.3. Thanks.
