I was *not* using packagekit myself.
kpackagekit was probably doing something.

For openSUSE 11.4 you could use the following repo to get a new version of zypper: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/zypp:/Head/openSUSE_11.4/ 
after you add this repo update zypper. Report if that crash still happens.

Under openSUSE 12.1 with zypper 1.6.18, Packagekitd has no problems while running.

This is not good advice.
I try it, but there is many unsatisfied dependencies that breaks Yast and if I try ignoring it and choose "break" - then new zypper even can't update repos with "time out error".

11.4 is long out of service.
packagekit still crashy, but not as crashy as it was. Probably.
