Description Tony Watton 2011-04-19 19:41:38 UTC
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0

I installed opensuse 11.4 about and did a fresh install. The installation appeared to go through OK without any problems. I ran the online updates during the installation process which again was successful. I have subsequently had problems trying to install software such as acroread, vlc or the restricted formats either through, Yast software manager, one click install or manually using zypper. Software manager always hangs in the same place on downloading either, acroread, vlc-Nox, or in the case of one click install of the restricted formats on Ladspa. It's always the same files and the same percentage way through, eg acroread at 99%.

I've also the same problems with updates, either using yast online update, KPackageKit or booting into failsafe and trying to update or download from there.

Other packages can be downloaded through the software manager without any problem such as audacity, chkrootkit, aide.

I have tried changing the mirrors but still get the same problems with the same files at the same stage of downloading.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1 Enter software manager for online update or install
2.Select package to install eg acroread
3.Accept choice
4.Download stops with error message - Cannot access installation media etc (see below)
5 Option to retry but keeps hanging at same point ad infinitum
Actual Results:
This is the error I got for the update

Cannot access installation media http://downloadopen suse .org/update/11.4/updates for openSUSE 11.4 11.4-0 (Medium1)
Check whether the server is accessible

Timeout exceeded when accessing 'http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.4/rpm/i586/sane-backends-1.0.22-1.3.3_1.5.1.i586.delta.rpm'.

I get the same error messages when trying to install acroread, vlc, or the restricted formats but it obviously points to the appropriate repo. I've even tried changing mirrors but still get the same problem with exactly the same files at the same point.

Expected Results:
Updates or software package should have downloaded and installed..

The update finally worked after someone on the forum suggested a level 3 boot, typing su - and then zypper up.

This has been logged in the user forums and several other people have reported very similar problems.

I'm a private network user and not using proxy or in a campus or corporate network. I've been with the same ISP for several years and not had problems downloading files of any size. I can download OK on older versions of openSuse eg 11.3, Ubuntu, Linux Mint or Windows XP with no problems at all. This problem only happens with 11.4, and started as soon as it was installed.

(If it's the same problem as reported in the forum it's most likely a bug in the kernel/network stack, not a bug in libzypp/zypper/YaST. In the forum threads downloads with wget or firefox show the same problems.)

Some reporters have said that they can download the same file just fine in failsafe mode. For one reporter this doesn't work, but instead, works in runlevel 3, IIRC.

I'm also getting the problems with wget etc. I can however get the downloads or update to work using a level 3 boot, and also download the same file from another machine running Ubuntu or windows XP, or even on this machine with opensuse 11.3. Just seem to have the problem in 11.4.

If I try and download again using failsafe or mormal boot, then the files hang again in exactly the same place. Only works for me with level 3 boot.

I have installed the latest Kernel from Kernel:HEAD repo the output from cat
/proc/version is:

Linux version 2.6.39-rc4-10-default (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 4.5.1
20101208 [gcc-4_5-branch revision 167585] (SUSE Linux) ) #1 SMP 2011-04-22
00:02:11 +0200

I rebooted the PC, logged in with the new kernel, ran software manager in yast
and selected acroread for install. Unfortunately, this still hung at 99% of
download.
