Description Andrew Fitzsimon 2011-04-29 12:18:04 UTC
Problem: http://lizards.opensuse.org/2011/04/29/metal-theme-for-yast2/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Bloated design rationale:

All texture interferes with type legibility as type itself creates a texture that must then compete with it's background in order to be visible / legible.
A highly textured background such as this metal theme creates unnecessary noise, obfuscating the text eliminating the usefulness of the text placed on top.

Possible solutions.
1.) remove all text OR 2.) remove background texture, you cant have both

Suggested solution:

Remove the background texture, the next is needed to indicate functionality on the form (otherwise why have the form right)

Note: Texture in interface design is not a bad thing infact it can help draw attention to malleable interactive interface elements; however, it must not
ever create a problem where no problem exists before as in this example.

I understand that this is an experiment, but it's also unprofessional to expose via our UI. please don't do it.

Thanks for you quick report.

YaST will get new features and improvements. I want users to recognize that YaST is still alive and development is going on. That's the reason why I want to change/improve the look and feel of YaST's user interface.

yast2-qt supports themes using style sheets that can be edited while runtime. See: http://lizards.opensuse.org/2008/12/23/yast-qt4-stylesheet-editor/

Andy, do you have a proposal for a cool and usable new YaST style?
Comment 5 Thomas Göttlicher 2011-04-29 12:46:04 UTC
I removed the theme from the theme package. yast2-theme-2.21.2 doesn't contain it anymore.
