Description Harald Koenig 2011-06-07 17:07:18 UTC
autofs in 11.4 does not (most of the time) timeout and unmount unused mounts.

autofs gets all it's maps via NIS. this setup worked fine up to 11.3.
only 11.4 shows this box.

installing autofs-5.0.5-7.2 binary from 11.3 in 11.4 seems to fix the problem.

is this a known problem ? any fix already ?

hopefully I can provide more details and info tomorrow...

11.4 autofs does not unmount unused mounts when sending SIGUSR1.

after recompiling/installing/restarting 11.3 autofs sources for/on 11.4 those idle mounts still exist. after sending SIGUSR1 to the (now running) 11.3 style autofs, all idle mounts get unmounted.

any clues why 11.4 automount does not unmount idle mount points, not even after SIGUSR1 ?

we have the same problem using LDAP automount maps.

I'll take a look.

Harald, Klaus: please, could you test the AutoFS package for openSUSE 11.4 that is now available at the repository below?

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/leonardocf:/branches:/openSUSE:/11.4:/Update:/Test/standard/

I'm planning to submit an update to 11.4 as soon as you guys confirm this package resolves the problem. Thanks!

a first quick response: looks good to me! both a quick test with SIGUSR1 worked, then I "mounted" 100+ dirs via 'ls -ld /home/$user/. ' -- they all did time out after 10+ miinutes.

though I'd like to wait for some more tests/comments from our admin tomorrow since he mentioned that there have been rumors that at least "sometimes" the plain 11.4 autofs seemed to time out, too... (so maybe I'm just luky right now with my few tests on my own PC ?!?).

I'll keep the "NEEDINFO" for now and will give more info later (hopefully tomorrow...)

thanks for your quick response!

Harald, Klaus: just wanted to check if you guys had time to try the test package. Thanks!
Comment 7 Klaus Jänsch 2011-06-28 09:50:58 UTC
autofs-5.0.5-14.19.1.i586 is still not unmounting on our server. But it works well on standard PC's. I try to find out what makes the difference. The only thing I found for now is that the server has much more resources (2 x Intel Hexacore XEON, 24GB RAM). The system on all hosts is openSuSE 11.4 32-bit PAE kernel.

There's an AutoFS update candidate available in the openSUSE:11.4:Update:Test repository. It is supposed to fix this bug.

I'd appreciate if you guys could try it and report any problems. It will be released in one week if there are no complaints. Thanks!

Please reopen if you're still able to reproduce the problem with the latest (just released) maintenance update. Thanks.
